Provides a leadership role utilizing knowledge, security expertise, support and education to staff to assure optimum performance of department. Provides security through daily surveillance of building and adjoining grounds for patients, employees and visitors. Adjusts communications specific to the age, developmental stage, and comprehension level of a population that spans adolescents to geriatrics (excluding newborns). Applies knowledge of cultural factors appropriately in communications and interactions of the population being served.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR
LICENSURE
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
1. Three (3) years' experience in a safety or security related field. 2. Previous experience supervising a staff of employees.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR
LICENSURE
1. Associates Degree with an emphasis on security management or criminal justice. 2. Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement or Corrections Academy.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Provides a leadership role to security officers by coaching, counseling, and lending expertise to promote positive interaction within the hospital and the public both in preventing and resolving conflicts. 2. Schedules the security staff to cover the approved schedule. Coordinates daily functions of the team to help ensure that all tasks assigned are completed in an efficient manner. 3. Evaluates performance of security officers and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Completes competencies for security personnel. 4. Coordinates and conducts initial and annual training programs for security personnel to include new security officer orientation and maintains training records. 5. Maintains a professional attitude at all times, being politely firm and positive. Conflicts should be handled smoothly and effectively and when that is not possible, law enforcement officers must be summoned. 6. Manages security violations appropriately, calling for police or administrative assistance when needed. Ensures security violations are reported in the appropriate report systems. 7. Responds to requests for assistance from hospital personnel, students and visitors, e.g. available at shift changes to escort employees to designated parking areas. 8. Prepares name badges and parking permits as requested by the Human Resource Department. Observes staff to be sure name tags are present and visible per hospital policy. 9. Assists with restraining a violent patient or violent visitor until police arrive. 10. Participates in investigations and interacts with police force, maintains records and prepares incident reports when indicated by the incident reporting procedure. Adds cases to activity log by listing any case that requires potential time in court. 11. During routine security patrols, doors found unlocked are secured and entered into computer log. Offices and areas are unlocked when requested if appropriate; also logged into computer. 12. Reviews security manual to maintain current knowledge. Responds to emergency situations according to responsibilities outlined in the disaster, fire, bomb threat and hostage situation plans found in the safety section of the security manual. 13. Routine security patrols also include safety checks as listed in the procedure manual. Any violations are corrected or reported to the safety officer or put into the incident reporting system on the internet. 14. Ensures that all surveillance records, reports, schedules, and directives are maintained within the security office. 15. Assists with managing Hospital Fleet vehicles to include monthly inspections and maintenance. 16. Assists with maintaining electronic and manual (lock and key) security systems. 17. Follows hospital, local, state and federal guidelines for ensuring safe environment for workers, patients and public. Maintains and monitors staff compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control. Complies with JC, OSHA and
HIPAA. 18.
Communicates and interacts with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff and the public in general in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for the individuals' need(s). Ensures that all information relating to security and parking policies and communicated to all patients, visitors and staff. 19. Remains current and responsive to changes in healthcare delivery and safety and security standards established by professional organizations, regulatory and accrediting bodies and the needs of the organization. Participates in all required in-service programs. Attends workshops as required. 20. Develops and implements processes to assess and improve the services provided and compliance with regulatory requirements. Coordinates regulatory agency surveys and inspections of facility. Reports results to appropriate administrative levels.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must meet Department of Labor's MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly) 2. Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift.

May be exposed to various situations related to working in an acute care hospital environment
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Must be able to obtain/maintain Defensive Tactics, OC Spray, Baton, and Taser certifications. 2. Must be able to obtain/maintain VA DCJS Registration. 3. Must be able to successfully pass background check and psychological evaluation.
