Under direction of the Supervising Special Investigator I, in the Investigations Central Southern California Section, Clovis Unit, the Special Investigator (SI), will independently, or as a lead, plan, organize, conduct routine, difficult, complex administrative investigations of individuals or business entities suspected of violations of the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act (Act) and the California Code of Regulations Title 14, Division 2, Chapter 5 (Regulations). Working irregular hours may be required, including nights, holidays, and weekends that will require an adjustment to the employee's work schedule. This position may require up to 75% travel per year. Travel is throughout California (may include out-of-state) and may include extended periods requiring overnight accommodations. Travel to include, but not limited to, driving a motor vehicle and travel via public transportation, including commercial airplane, train, ride-share and in the same vehicle as other staff. Fieldwork will be required in various regions of the state and out-of-state, where weather conditions and temperatures can vary. Must possess required documents to travel via commercial airplane (i.e. Real ID and/or US passport). Incumbent must have and maintain a current valid California driver's license, be able to travel via various means of public transportation methods, including, but not limited to commercial airlines, public shuttles, shared rental cars, etc. and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Employer Pull Notice Program. Incumbent does not have peace officer authority, nor do they perform peace officer responsibilities as defined in the pertinent Penal Code California Section 830 et. seq. Working Conditions Beginning July 1, 2026, CalRecycle staff will be office centered, requiring employees to report to the office at least four days per week. This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program needs. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the positions designated headquarter location, as reflected on the duty statement and at their own expense.
