Job Description

Lead Grounds Maintenance Foreman I
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Supervises crews engaged in the grading, fertilizing, seeding, landscaping, tree trimming, lining, grass cutting, trash and garbage collection, paving and related operations;
  • Estimates new jobs relative to manpower, time and material required;
  • Assigns crews for the accomplishment of the task;
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions, including written reports and other required documentation;
  • Schedules and oversees the work of contractors, including written reports and other required documentation;
  • Maintains time and work order records and adjusts work assignments for maximum production;
  • Responds to emergency situations resulting from vandalism, fires, flooding and storms/inclement weather;
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations for crews and students;
  • Assists Ground Maintenance Foreman II with supervisory duties when necessary; initiating disciplinary action when required; and
  • Trains and instructs subordinates and other school system personnel.
Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard tools, equipment, materials used in the performance of grounds maintenance work, equipment repair and servicing and turf maintenance;
  • Knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions required in the performance of grounds maintenance work;
  • Operational knowledge of School Dude maintenance reporting software and basic Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to calculate and determine the quality and types of materials and equipment needed in the performance of the work;
  • Ability to assign and supervise the work of others;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and
  • Deemed as essential personnel and may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or vocational school course with sufficient experience in grounds maintenance work to meet the requirements for the skills specified, or any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (commercial operator's license Class A) with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, of which no more than three (3) shall have accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George's County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88, dated July 21, 1987).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises the work of crews composed of Ground Maintenance Foreman I, Laborers, Trades Helpers and Equipment Operators in grounds maintenance and repairs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
