Learning Specialist The Haverford School - 3.7 Haverford, PA Job Details Full-time 19 hours ago Qualifications Professional ethics Writing skills Employee relationship building Individual psychological assessments Cultural competency Working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds Working with students Parent communication in school administration Working with families Full Job Description Upper School Instructional/Learning Specialist FLSA classification: Exempt, Full-time Responsible to: Director of the Enrichment and Learning Center Last updated: May 2026 Position summary: The Haverford School, an independent boys' school, seeks a dynamic and collaborative Upper School Learning Specialist to support students with diverse learning profiles in grades 9-12. The Learning Specialist provides individualized academic support, study strategies, and accommodations to students, often focusing on those with learning disabilities, ADHD, or academic risk. They assist with time management, test-taking, and self-advocacy skills, working closely with faculty and disability services to foster independent learning. This position reports to the Director of the Learning Center and the Head of Upper School.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Conduct one-on-one and small-group sessions to teach study skills, organizational techniques, and test-taking strategies. Review disability documentation, create learning support plans, and implement authorized academic accommodations. Works with teachers to expand their use of a variety of resources to improve instruction Monitor academic progress, teach writing and reading strategies, and provide supportive coaching for students facing academic challenges. Work with faculty to facilitate accommodations. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students. Act as a liaison between families, teachers, and outside specialists. Possess an understanding of character, culture, and community, and the implementation of those principles in an independent school. Support students in building confidence, independence, and self-advocacy skills. Must be familiar with current education guidelines, policies, and regulations. Contributes to bi-weekly US student support meetings. Possess an understanding of character, culture, and community, and the implementation of those principles in independent schools. Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills. Other duties, as assigned Minimum acceptable qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's (preferred) degree in Special Education, Learning Disabilities, or a related field Preferred 3 years of teaching experience Proven experience working with students with learning differences, preferably in independent, private, or boarding school environments. The ability to work with students one-on-one to encourage positive work habits, focused on building executive functioning skills Familiarity with interpreting psychological/neurological testing. Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and parents Proven ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds Sense of humor, enthusiastic and happy, high ethical professional standards, and multicultural perspective
Required Physical Characteristics:
Works in an environment with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time Occasionally lift up to 10 lbs. Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment
