Licensed Vocational Nurse Basic Function:
Under the direction of the District Registered Nurse, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will monitor the health and welfare of students and support the educational process with specific responsibilities for providing health care services, administering first aid and dispensing prescribed medications. Under the direction of the district nurse, incorporating health care plans directed by physicians; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and injured students; identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment, as directed by the district nurse; and maintaining health records and other health files. Representative Duties:
Essential Functions:
  • Administer and document first aid, medication and specialized treatments (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, documents data observed, actions taken and instructions provided by the district nurse, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for the ill, medically fragile and injured children.
  • Assist students (e.g. diapering, toileting and/or toilet training, catheterization, feeding, ect.) for the purpose of addressing personal care needs.
  • Collaborates with parents, students, health care provider, district nurse and/or approved public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services, providing information and complying with legal requirements.
  • Compiles data (e.g. student health screenings, number of visits to health room/office, etc.) for the purpose of preparing reports and program assessments.
  • Implements health care plans for students with health issues for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements.
  • Maintains students' confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies (e.g. medicine, medical, office, etc.) for the purpose of distributing to appropriate personnel and/or students and ensuring item availability as needed.
  • Monitors students for illness, injury, and/or chronic medical conditions for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns, initiating follow-up care, communicating with parents, and referring to the district nurse if indicated.
  • Notifies parents and/or guardians (e.g. student immunization needs, medication refills, medical supplies, needed, student injuries and illnesses, etc.) for the purpose of meeting district administrative requirements and mandated guidelines.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams (e.
g. School Attendance Review Board (SARB), Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs), Student Study Teams (SSTs), students with disabilities meetings, etc.) for the purpose of gathering and/or conveying information on students' health needs, service delivery, educational programs, and/or improving skills and knowledge.
  • Prepares various documents (e.g. student health history, current health status, reports, sub plans, student lists, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support, conveying information, and complying with mandated requirements and professional guidelines.
  • Process documents and materials (e.g. new enrollments, health screening results, etc.) for the purpose of updating and distributing information.
  • Refers students requiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-up treatment and services in consultation with the district nurse.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, inappropriate behaviors) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code and school policies.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate attention and related follow-up action.
  • Assists the district nurse with providing in-service education to school personnel regarding health issues.

  • Required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others
  • Analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: providing health services in a school setting; health standards and hazards; anatomy and physiology; stages of child development; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; business telephone etiquette; concepts of grammar, spelling and punctuation; and treatment modalities.
  • Perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
  • Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records
  • Adhere to safety practices; administering first aid/CPR; and operating medical equipment utilized in school environment Ability to:
  • Schedule activities and/or meetings; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined, but different processes and operate equipment using defined methods.
  • Work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.
  • Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate.
  • Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; adhering to safety practices; displaying tact and courtesy under stressful situations; multitasking; and being attentive to detail.
Education/Experience Requirement:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
  • Two years of experience in a health care setting involving contact with children preferred.
  • Relevant experience, education, certificates and/or licenses may be substituted.
Licenses and other requirements:
  • Current California LVN or RN license
  • Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate
  • Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Training
Health Office Procedures Training Working Conditions:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 60% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and in some varying atmospheric conditions.
