Assists the nursing staff in providing optimum and quality resident care, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of each resident. Under the supervision of a physician, gives direct and indirect patient care including medication administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides resident care services for the facility. Receive staff report on residents during shift change and review completion of report and throughout assigned shift, noting changes or addition of resident assignments. Provide care appropriate for the residents served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Assess and interpret data on residents status to identify residents requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provide care needed as stipulated in departmental policy. Communicate and treat residents in a professional, honest, fair, and respectful manner at all times. Assist in providing personal hygiene, physical, and nutritional care for residents. Change bandages, dress wounds, insert catheters and ensure residents comfort. Perform resident rounds with physician while obtaining supplies or equipment requested by physician as needed. Perform procedures and treatments designed to prevent physical deterioration and as assigned and document appropriately. Evaluate residents response to care provided and redirect care as necessary under the supervision of the RN Supervisor. Provide basic assessments which accurately reflect overt physiological and psychosocial needs of residents and report unusual findings to appropriate personnel. Chart all resident care provided in a timely manner according to Hospital District policy. Administer medications ordered by the physician using prudent nursing judgement and ensuring that all residents receive correct dose, route, time, and drug and document accordingly. Examine the established medication dispenser to assure all orders are accurate, report any discrepancies to the Director of Nursing in a timely manner. Stock medication room and medication cart as needed. Inventory narcotics at beginning of shift and document appropriately. Report discrepancies to RN Supervisor and Director of Nursing immediately. Ensure the medication cart is locked at all times and keys are stowed in a safe place.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS
Maintain confidentiality on a daily basis. Work well with other employees. Perform other functions and tasks as assigned. Follow standard precautions when providing direct patient care or handling potentially infectious materials WHY EHD?

EDUCATION
Graduate of an accredited school of vocational nursing required.
EXPERIENCE
One year experience as a licensed vocational nurse preferred.
PERSONAL JOB-RELATED SKILLS
Knowledge of resident care. Effective written and oral communication skills. Familiar with operating computers and the ability to utilize computer systems.
LICENSURE, REGISTRY, CERTIFICATIONS
Licensed Vocational Nurse currently licensed by the state of Texas required. Current CPR certification required.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Duties of the position require moderate periods of walking and standing. Pushing, pulling, reaching, and bending when involved in patient care. Lifting up to 52 pounds and occasional heavy lifting in supporting or moving patients that may suddenly become weak or helpless. The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
