Lineman

MAJOR FUNCTION A

lineman performs a variety of tasks involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of power, lighting and signal systems. Work is usually performed under the supervision of the Electric Foreman; however, employees may be assigned to emergency trouble spots in which case they work independently or with another lineman. Work is subject to inspection by the Electric Foreman while in progress and upon completion for quality and adherence to safety precautions.

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT JOB DUTIES

Essential Duties Climbs poles to repair, replace, or construct power lines, lightening arrestors, insulators, transformers, street lights, capacitor bank switches, circuit breakers, cross arms braces, and related electrical distribution equipment. Monitors electrical loads and circuits by use of ammeters, volt-meters, ohmmeters, and related testing equipment. Splices cable, replaces fuses and locates and clears short circuits and other sources of power failure. Uses hot sticks, switch sticks, fuse pullers, rubber gloves, and other safety equipment to repair energized and de-energized lines and circuits. Sets poles, assists in making necessary repairs; operate bucket, winch, and pole derrick trucks as required. Performs maintenance and repair work on meters and traffic controls. Performs other duties as requested.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Lineman experience is preferred but not required; training is available. Minimum Training and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid Florida Driver License. If not certified as a lineman, the ability to develop the skills of a lineman required for certification. Ability to learn the electrical distribution system of the City as far as service area and districts. Ability to use all extremities, do heavy lifting and pulling, work in adverse weather conditions and not have a fear of working at heights in a bucket.
