Duties & Responsibilities

• Complete a Trailer Yard Inspection on a daily basis, complete paperwork, and send it to appropriate USG employees and Halvor Lines Dispatch.
• If trailers are dirty or have debris, responsible for sweeping and cleaning out the interior.
• Coordinate with USG to ensure proper number of outbound trailers are available and scheduled for use.
• Responsible compiling billing information all freight companies accordingly for completed Tarped loads as well as Spotting charges, and then forwarding to accounting at Halvor Lines for processing.
• Responsible for managing all Tarping/Spotting staff, including approving time off, performance evaluations, scheduling, and corrective actions (with input from Human Resources).
• Responsible for conveying information between the Tarper/Spotters and USG staff.
• Assists in the interviewing and hiring process for all Tarping/Spotting employees.
• Ensure safe practices are constantly being observed by all Tarping/Spotting staff, personal protective equipment is being utilized appropriately, and correcting any violations.
• Training all Tarping and Spotting employees on the use of Personal Protective Equipment initially and on an ongoing basis as requested and required by the Chief Risk Officer.
• Completes monthly/weekly safety inspections on all ladders and harnesses used by Tarping and Spotting staff.
• Using available equipment (plastic, tarps, straps, edge protectors), the Tarper and Spotter will cover the flatbed loads to ensure proper protection of the load when it leaves USG property.
• Setting flatbed trailers up by laying out straps/tarps prior to the load being placed on flatbed
• Ensuring that after covering the load all straps/tarps/plastic are secured properly and firmly to ensure the load is secure on the flatbed.
• Ensure that the edge protectors are in place and protecting the corners/edges of the load.
• Move trailers with a spotter truck to the assigned loading dock when instructed.
• Pull trailer away from loading dock with the spotter truck when instructed.
• Responsible for any after hours (evening and weekend) calls regarding Tarping/Spotting.
• Ensure that when moving trailers with the spotter truck to observe safe speeds and ensure that you are aware of all surrounding hazards or potential risks and adjusting driving patterns as needed.
• Use all relevant safety equipment consistently and as directed by supervisor and safety officials.
• Work in a safe manner at all times.
• Removing snow off flatbed trailer as needed.
• Ability to achieve goals set forth by management.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Experience with tarping/spotting required (four years minimum preferred).
• Supervisor experience is strongly preferred.
• Valid Class D driver's license required
• Ability to interface positively and professionally with drivers, loaders, and other individuals
• Must possess basic math skills.
• Ability to motivate employees effectively.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work safely and in accordance with all company safety requirements at all times
• Ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and carry-out duties and responsibilities in an environment with constant interruptions, moving trucks, and other distractions
• Must be flexible and patient in dealing with changing situations

• Ability to follow directions and to work safely at all times

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

• Requires moving, standing, and physical activity for long periods of time (95%).
• When spotting, constant use of a cellular phone and earpiece for communication.
• Requires ability to communicate clearly.
• Must be able to perform effectively under pressure in situations requiring last-minute scheduling.
• Majority of Tarping duties are performed indoors; Majority of Spotting duties are performed outdoors.
• Constant use of ladders, and always harnessed in a safety harness before climbing ladder
• Must wear safety glasses, steel toe boots, and safety harnesses.
• Frequent exposure to high noise levels and hot to cold temperatures.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
• Requires constant ability to communicate clearly.
• Requires ability to work in front of computer monitor and keyboard for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to perform effectively under pressure.
