Evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314 and NCBOE Policy 4220.

Must hold a valid license from the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses. Personnel must be or have been classified in Aide, or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the
Job Description Title :
"Licensed Practical Nurse" means a nurse licensed from the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses and employed to work in a public school under the supervision of a school nurse. "Aide IV" means a service person referred to in the "Aide I" classification who holds high school diploma or a general educational development certificate; and Has completed eighteen hours of State Board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, or Has completed fifteen hours of State Board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education; and Has successfully completed an in-service training program determined by the state Board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credit.
Job Summary:
To provide nursing services to students with special medical needs, and to perform duties to assist teacher and student with daily classroom activities. May be assigned to assist students with school travel. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substance which affects employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated. Staff members serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Staff members have a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
Performance Responsibilities:
All responsibilities shall be fulfilled in consultation with and under the supervision of the certified school nurse assigned to the particular school and within the scope and practice of a West Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse. Provide support for health services at the local school level to meet the particular health needs of students in that school. Under the supervision of the certified school nurse, document health information for appropriate school personnel and health care agencies. Provide pertinent information to immediate supervisor. Establish good public and employee relations. Maintain professional work habits. Maintain and upgrade his/her professional skills. Assess the immunization status of children entering a West Virginia school for the first time and provide a report to the certified school nurse assigned to the particular school. Provide emergency care and first aid to injured/ill students and school personnel. Refer students to appropriate health care providers. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment. Document pertinent health information on permanent record cards, appraisal sheets and/or student health files. Assist with medical clinics. Develops and maintains a safe work environment at all times. Serve special education students as well as other students in the classroom or school setting. Participate in implementation of student's curriculum as directed by the teacher and related service providers. Participate in specialized training such as but not limited to behavior support, curriculum, CPR and First Aide for the classroom. Demonstrate basic proficiency in specialized procedures such as but not limited to gastrostomy and jejunostomy tube feedings via bolus and continuous feeding pumps, suctioning, catheterization, seizure management with emergency medication administration (Rectal Diazepam), diabetic management with glucose monitoring and insulin administration via subcutaneous injection or insulin pump, administration of medications including emergency medications such as Glucagon and EpiPens Required to follow and implement procedures described in health care plans Participate in School Health Services staff annual orientation and other specified in-service meetings throughout the school year. Performs duties as outlined by the classroom teacher. Keeps files of the children's work, test scores, health services, etc. Prepares routine notices concerning activities, meetings, etc. Conducts activities for students with directions firmly established by the teacher. Monitors testing and classroom tasks assigned to students. Corrects activities assigned to students. Operates audiovisual equipment in the course of instructional duties. Secures materials for instructional programs through proper channels. Prepares material for instruction as outlined by the classroom teacher. Available for consultations with parents. Complies with in-service training required by Nicholas County Schools. Keeps records as needed to accomplish evaluation for programs and sees that all information on students Is current and available for review at all times. Keeps a skill mastery list on each student up to date in cooperation with classroom teacher where required. Rides buses with students as assigned and assists in maintaining discipline on the bus Assist students in boarding and disembarking from buses Secure students in seats with approved safety equipment for buses Maintains positive work habits. Performs duties efficiently and productively. Maintains and/or upgrades job-related skills. Perform all other assignments related to the job as assigned by the Superintendent, building principal, and/or the certified school nurse.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least fifty (50) pounds of materials, children, etc. May require lifting of up to 100 lbs vertically Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
