TCI Position Overview The Security Systems Designer is a senior technical role responsible for designing and specifying physical security systems including access control, video surveillance, and intrusion detection systems. This individual will serve as the primary technical resource for the sales team, translating customer requirements into accurate, scalable, and code-compliant system designs. This position requires extensive hands-on field experience and a deep understanding of modern IP-based security technologies, installation best practices, and permitting requirements. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, efficient, and thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The position is ideal for a candidate that has been in the field for an extended period of time and is seeking to transition to another area of the security business. The position is full-time, based in our Va Beach office with some minimal travel required (usually day trips). Key Responsibilities Work closely with the sales team to develop security system designs that meet customer requirements, budgets, and timelines. Conduct site surveys to assess building conditions, infrastructure, and installation requirements Design complete physical security solutions including access control systems, video surveillance systems, and intrusion detection system Determine appropriate hardware selection based on door types, building construction, code requirements, and usage scenarios Develop detailed system layouts and drawings for installation, customer presentation, and permitting purposes Create complete and accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) including all equipment, cabling, and accessories required for system deployment Develop labor estimates and project budgets aligned with design scope Utilize CAD and design software such as System Surveyor, Bluebeam, Visio, or similar to produce professional-grade plans Prepare and submit permit applications with local municipalities and respond to plan review comments as needed Collaborate with internal teams including sales, project management, and operations to ensure designs are clearly communicated and executable Participate in customer meetings to present technical designs and explain system functionality •Maintain and improve internal design standards, templates, and checklists to ensure consistency and accuracy Evaluate new technologies and solutions to improve system performance and design efficiency Required Qualifications • Minimum 5+ years of field experience installing and servicing physical security systems including access control, CCTV, and intrusion alarm systems. Strong working knowledge of access control hardware, door locking mechanisms, including Schlage, Allegion, Yale, maglocks, electric strikes, electric latch/deadbolt, & various wireless locks Strong ability to read architectural plans, blueprints, and takeoffs Extensive experience with IP-based video surveillance systems and camera technologies, understanding of camera viewing angles, lens selection, and proper placement of cameras to achieve desired coverage Experience with intrusion detection, sensors, and alarm systems Experience with structured cabling systems including CAT6 and fiber optic installations Proven ability to design complete security systems from concept through implementation Experience developing Bills of Materials and labor estimates for security projects Familiarity with building and fire codes and permitting application processes for local municipalities Strong proficiency with common computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Word, Outlook, & Copilot Experience with CAD or design tools such as System Surveyor, Bluebeam, Visio, or similar Strong understanding of modern IP-enabled security systems and network-dependent devices Excellent written and verbal communication skills High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational ability Ability to manage multiple design projects, meet deadlines, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment Additional Requirements Willingness to travel as needed for site visits, customer meetings, and project support, primarily within Virginia and North Carolina Valid Virginia DCJS registration and/or North Carolina ASLB licensing, or the ability to obtain required credentials Ability to pass a criminal background check as required for licensing (Clean driving record and valid driver's license required.) Preferred Qualifications Experience in a design or pre-sales engineering role Knowledge of low-voltage permitting, code compliance, and life safety requirements Experience integrating access control, video, and alarm systems into unified platforms Manufacturer certifications such as Verkada, Brivo, Eagle Eye, Paxton, Genetec, Avigilon, Axis, Honeywell, Alarm.com, or similar Some knowledge of fire system core functionality is a plus NICET certification or equivalent industry credentials Key Attributes Inquisitive and solution-driven mindset with a strong desire to continuously learn Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects at once over multiple time durations.
