Job Description

Overview The Department of Buildings & General Services (BGS) Safety & Security team protects employees, visitors, and property across state-owned and leased facilities throughout Vermont. Within that team, the Security Systems Unit does hands-on, in-the-field work installing, maintaining, and repairing physical security equipment in approximately 150 buildings statewide, including correctional facilities, public safety buildings, and administrative offices. This role will be responsible for installation and maintenance work including running conduit and cable, mounting hardware, working on ladders and lifts, and troubleshooting equipment on site. The Specialist also installs and services card access hardware, cameras, door controls, alarms, intercoms, and related infrastructure, ensuring systems are reliable, code-compliant, and built to last. Work is performed in active buildings, often in coordination with contractors, electricians, and building occupants. This is a trades-oriented position and we're looking for someone who takes pride in building and maintaining physical systems. From assessing site conditions and laying out equipment placement to completing installs and ongoing repairs, this role sees projects through from start to finish. The work requires strong mechanical aptitude, comfort using tools and ladders, and the ability to independently diagnose and resolve issues in the field. Environmental Factors Duties are performed in both office and field settings, outdoors and inside buildings including correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior, and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Attendance at meetings as a representative of the Department may be required. Speaking at meetings may be necessary. Considerable travel can be expected. Some exposure to adverse climate conditions may occur. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. This position may require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present. Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years or more of experience in building maintenance, or installing/repairing electrical or security systems. Preferred Qualifications Associates degree or higher in relevant field. Experience providing oversight for construction or maintenance projects. Experience installing or repairing security cameras, badge readers, and/or alarm systems. Ability to interpret schematics and blueprint design. Experience providing oversight of construction, maintenance, or renovation projects. Experience with cost estimates, cost analysis, and project monitoring. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and carry and climb a 6-foot ladder. Special Requirements Valid driver's license required. Successful candidates must pass state and federal criminal background checks.
