POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
Performs any special or regular work involved in preparing, riveting, welding, cutting aluminum, fiberglass, fabrication, painting and/or finishing vehicles, equipment, signs, etc. and other duties as directed. Performs painting and/or finishing jobs as required. Must be familiar with inspections, road calls, and trouble shooting on all vehicles in the fleet. Repair and maintenance of all vehicle door controls, installing and maintaining fire extinguishers, first aid kits, fare boxes, flooring, seats, upholstery, glass and lights in all vehicles. Responsible for special equipment installations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Painting inside and outside of vehicles, including miscellaneous industrial equipment, etc. Lettering, numbering and striping of all types of transit and service vehicles. Performs any special printing and/or finishing jobs required, such as some painting of shop and office areas as may become necessary, as well as fabricating and finishing parking signs and bus stop signs as required. Removal, repair, fabrication of, replacement of, painting, and finishing of exterior body panels, moldings, compartment doors, and structural body parts of all fleet vehicles. Repair, replacement, rehabilitation of interior side panels, seats, dash boards, doors, wheel wells, flooring, ceilings, windows, and lighting systems on all vehicles. Design and cutting of vinyl vehicle coatings. Designing placement of vinyl coatings. Installation, repair, and maintenance of vinyl vehicle coatings. Repair and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems relating to vehicle body functions (outside the power train) of all vehicles. Perform complete vehicle inspections for the purpose of generating accident repair estimates, including pricing, parts orders, and time and labor estimates necessary to perform the repair work and to prepare billings for insurance claims. Repair and maintenance of all vehicle door controls so that doors operate properly. Performing vehicle body inspections, road calls as needed, and trouble shooting for vehicles. Installing fire extinguishers, first aid kits, flooring, seats and upholstery, and glass in all vehicles. Participates and attends the special events of the AAATA. Welding utilizing arc and mig and acetylene heat sources. Mixing, using, and disposing of paints, thinners, hardeners, and other paint-related chemicals as may be required. Utilizing acetylene torches and plasma for cutting. Utilizing respirator equipment; training others on the use of respirator and other associated safety equipment and maintaining such equipment. REQUIREMENTS
Physical & Visual Activities:
Constant periods of standing, twisting, walking, sitting, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, lying down, speaking, hearing, using hand tools and rapidly vibrating tools near and far visual acuity, depth perception, accommodation and color vision.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Occasional lifting and carrying of supplies, parts and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. Must comply with all OSHA standards for respirator usage.
ENVIRONMENTAL/ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS
Frequent exposure to fumes, dust, chemicals, and surface areas. Occasional exposure to heat, cold, rain, wind and snow.
JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
SKILLS
AND ABILITY
High school diploma or GED with two years of progressively responsible experience as a painter and light mechanic. Attendance at one or more service schools relating to paint and body; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Must have a good general knowledge of, and be proficient in handling and use of all equipment and materials required in preparing, painting and/or finishing vehicles, equipment, signs, etc. Must be proficient in hand striping and lettering, spray and brush painting, and other related work carried out in the AAATA paint and body shop. General knowledge of automotive servicing equipment and supplies; must be able to perform minor bus repairs and service. Demonstrated ability to complete tasks accurately with a minimum of supervision, carefulness, thoroughness, physical strength and stamina. Ability to read and understand and interpret maintenance manuals and parts manuals, instruments, and drawings. Demonstrated ability to maintain a good working relationship with fellow workers and supervisors. The technician filling this position will use all applicable safety equipment. Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days of hire. Must have adequate physical strength of tasks and possess the minimum issue of body repair and paint tools to necessary to perform the work associated with the position. Knowledge of warranty procedures, stock handling procedures, ordering and purchasing procedures will be a plus. Ability to perform math computations associated with preparing estimates. Ability to work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions. Ability to attend to, memorize and retain details. Possess analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to interact with a wide variety of personalities while working under frequent periods of stress. Ability to be an effective team player or to work entirely alone as situations may warrant. Basic familiarity with computers.
