Job Description
Description This is a safety sensitive position and employees will be subject to Department of Transportation Drug Testing Guidelines•This position is only open to current PUSD employees•
E Prepare and maintain a variety of written or electronic logs and records, such as maintenance activities, repairs, and assigned activities. E Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues or concerns related to vehicle maintenance and assigned activities. E Maintain tools, equipment, machinery, and work area for District vehicles in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. E Operate a fork-lift for the moving of parts, equipment, or supplies. E Respond to emergency repair needs as requested. E Operate vehicles and equipment for recovery, repair, and testing operations. E Drive a vehicle to conduct work. E Participate in ongoing trainings and staff development. Perform related duties as assigned. At the end of some of the duty statements, there is an " E" which identifies essential duties required of the classification. Minimum Qualifications
BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform advanced diagnostics and skilled work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and routine maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment; perform required inspections and preventive maintenance of buses and other District vehicles. Examples of DutiesREPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, advanced diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment; perform vehicle and equipment inspections and preventive maintenance according to established guidelines and procedures. E Operate computerized and specialized equipment in the testing, diagnosis, and repair of District vehicles; operate a computer and assigned software, including computerized on-board systems and electronics, to compile and evaluate information used in the diagnosis of system malfunctions. E Adjust, repair, and maintain air and hydraulic brake systems; perform transmission and engine inspections, maintenance, and repairs; perform minor and major tune-ups on District vehicles and equipment; rebuild or replace engines as appropriate. E Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle electrical systems, such as lighting, wiring, fuel, air conditioning, lubricating, emission, hydraulic and cooling systems as assigned. E Diagnose, repair, or replace vehicle transmissions; repair, adjust or replace various components, such as fuel systems, hydraulic cylinders, valve controls, generators, ignition systems, bearings, drive trains, and gears. E Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections; assure compliance with California Highway Patrol school bus maintenance regulations and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. E Operate a variety of equipment, such as hand and power tools, lifts, jacks, stands, tire machines, testers, meters, and diagnostic equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. E Utilize schematics, rough sketches, and technical manuals to assure proper inspection, maintenance and repair of District vehicles and equipment. E Conduct minor repairs and adjustments to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling infrastructure. E Oversee required Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel system and cylinder inspections. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and four years of journey-level experience in vehicle maintenance and repair work involving the use of computerized and specialized diagnostic equipment.LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents must have an acceptable driving record and must qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier. The following licenses or other requirements must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment: Valid California Class B or Class A commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements. US Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Master Automotive Technician, Master Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician, or Master School Bus Technician is preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Alternative Fuels Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Technician, and Natural Gas Fueling Station Operation and Maintenance Certification is preferred.NOTE:

Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in vehicle maintenance and repair work. Principles of internal combustion engines and automotive mechanical and electrical systems. Techniques, practices, theories, and procedures of diesel, gas, and alternative fueled vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment. Operation of computerized and specialized equipment used in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles including on-board systems and electronics. Principles of air and hydraulic brake systems. Proper operation of school buses, other District vehicles, and fork-lifts. Preventive maintenance practices and procedures. Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, Education Code, and Administrative Code applicable to the operation and maintenance of school buses. Maintain current knowledge of applicable District and site policies, procedures, and objectives of assigned program and activities. Math applicable to vehicle maintenance. Vehicle Maintenance Technician I - (Previously Assistant Mechanic) This is the entry level class in the Vehicle Maintenance Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Vehicle Maintenance Technician II by the performance of the more basic or routine diagnostics, tasks, and duties assigned to employees within the series. Vehicle Maintenance Technician II - (Previously Mechanic) This is the full journey-level class in the Vehicle Maintenance Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Vehicle Maintenance Technician I by the performance of complete diagnostics, engine overhauls, and the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Vehicle Maintenance Technician III - (Previously Vehicle Maintenance Technician) The Vehicle Maintenance Technician III is the advanced journey-level class in the Vehicle Maintenance Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult or complex diagnostics and responsibilities assigned to classes within this series. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
