Employment Type Full Time Job Summary Job Summary The job of Vehicle Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of supporting the educational process by providing mechanic services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and replacement needs; performing repairs and preventive maintenance; ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; operating a school bus if needed; providing information on the proper uses of equipment; assisting other mechanics; and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles including heavy gasoline and diesel powered equipment. Relevant experience, education, certificates and/or licenses may be substituted.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
(certification assistance will be provided by SUSD upon hire)
MUST BE ABLE TO OBTAIN
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger transport endorsement,
  • California Special Drivers Certificate,
  • California School Bus Certificate,
  • Medical Examiner's Certificate (for Commercial Driver Medical Certifications), and
  • CPR/First Aid certificate.
Preferred ASE or A-Plus certification in brakes, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, power train, suspension, and steering.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process will include screening to ensure application is complete and applicant meets minimum qualifications. The process will include a written exam on July 7, 2026 for all qualified applicants. Passing score is 70%. The district-wide eligibility list is valid for one year and will be used to fill full-time and substitute positions in this classification. The top three ranks of candidates will receive a departmental interview. Additional interviews will be conducted in rank order until all open positions are filled and as vacancies become available.
