EMERGENCY VEHICLE & HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

JOB SUMMARY
The Emergency Vehicle/ Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs highly skilled electrical and mechanical work of the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of emergency vehicle & heavy equipment of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Work is checked through occasional inspection in progress and by the quality of performance of repaired equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Repairs and overhauls a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and emergency apparatuses with special emphasis on diesel powered and complex public works equipment.
- Overhauls and services assemblies and accessories, such as single and two speed rear axles; hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components, pumps and items related to fire engines and ambulances
- Repairs and overhauls generators, motors, installs pistons, piston sleeves and bearings.
- Repairs and overhauls trucks, power shovels, tractors, air compressors, bulldozers, draglines, graders and other heavy engineering equipment.
- Conducts tests to locate defects in operation and checks on repair before returning equipment to service.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; and three (3) years of experience in the construction, repair, maintenance and servicing of diesel motors and diesel-powered construction equipment, including experience in all types of automotive repair and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job; and three (3) years of experience in working with emergency vehicle apparatuses.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class "A" or Class "B" CDL driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in engine repair and/or electrical systems, brakes must be possessed or obtained within one (1) year from date of employment.
- Must have EVTCC (Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of construction, design, repair and adjustment of diesel motors and of the common types of construction equipment where such motors are used for power, such as graders, rollers, and bulldozers.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for major and minor repairs of diesel motors and diesel-powered construction equipment.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems, especially those employed in diesel powered construction equipment.
- Knowledge of both light and heavy-duty electrical systems in regard to their role in the proper functioning of engineering equipment.
- Knowledge of the principles of operation of diesel fueled and gasoline internal combustion engines.
- Ability to perform both gas and arc welding, including knowledge of various metals, heat ranges applicable to welding various metals, and proper rods to be used for various metals.
- Ability to diagnose defects and failures of diesel motors and diesel-powered equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. Mental acuity is required for making rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes. Visual ability is required to operate heavy equipment and perform activities specific to the job, such as viewing a computer terminal, observation of facilities or structures, and/or inspection involving small parts or operations of machines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both inside in an office environment and outside environmental conditions in which the employee is subject to workplace hazards including exposure to atmospheric conditions with extreme cold and heat for short periods of time. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, fumes, grease or oils, electrical energy, slippery surfaces and large machinery. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Hardee County has the right to revise this job description at any time.
