Responsibilities An Automotive Technician performs both routine and complex repairs and maintenance on all types of motor vehicles in the postal fleet. They troubleshoot and diagnose more complex vehicle malfunction and may provide assistance to lower-level employees. Are there opportunities for advancement? While previous automotive experience can be beneficial, it's not a requirement. Are there any exam requirements during the hiring process? Applicants are required to successfully complete proctored exams, which assess automotive maintenance knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additionally, applicants must successfully pass a structured interview evaluation. How are exams administered? After applying for a job that requires an exam, you will receive an email with instructions on how to take the exam from the testing vendor. Check all email folders so you don't miss any USPS emails, including "spam" and "junk" folders. Add the following email domain addresses to your contact list - @usps.gov; @talogy.com; @geninfo.com; @uspis.gov. Postal Service exams are proctored exams that you will complete at an approved exam center. After taking the exam, an email from the testing vendor will notify you that results are available. Log into your exam testing vendor account to see your results on the Notice of Result. You can also log into your eCareer account to see your results. Is there a cost to take the exam? No, there is no cost associated with any postal exam. What's your company's process for background checks? The United States Postal Service Inspection Service criminal background check is conducted using United States information resources (e.g., FBI fingerprint check, state and county checks). A criminal background check includes a minimum 5-year inquiry of any locations within the United States or its territories where the individual has lived, worked, or attended school. What are the typical workhours for vehicle maintenance positions? Vehicle Maintenance employees work a standard 40-hour workweek, adhering to a 5-day work schedule with 2 consecutive days off. However, operational demands can necessitate variations in work hours and days off across different facilities, including working days, nights, and weekends to maintain operational efficiency. Will I be required to work overtime? While we strive to support a healthy work-life balance, there may be times when overtime is necessary based on operational needs. Employees interested in overtime can sign up on an overtime desired list. If additional coverage is needed after all volunteers have been scheduled, overtime may be assigned to non-volunteers. Employees required to work overtime will be compensated at the appropriate overtime rate. Will I have to provide any tools or equipment? No, you will not need to provide any tools or equipment. The Postal Service supplies all necessary tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and tool bags required for the job. This ensures that all vehicle maintenance personnel have the appropriate and standardized equipment to perform their tasks safely and efficiently. By providing these tools, the Postal Service ensures consistency in equipment quality and maintenance standards across the organization.
