Full Job Description SUMMARY:
Responsible for the maintenance, operations, and repairs of a Township vehicle fleet and ancillary equipment; does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES and
RESPONSIBILITIES
include but are not limited to the following. Leyden Township reserves the right to add, delete, change, or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time. Conducts maintenance and repairs to Township fleet, which includes automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, sanitation, and snow removal vehicles. Repairs equipment, machinery, motors, and pumps. Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and reconditions various types of light-duty and heavy gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. Rebuilds brake systems, repairs truck bodies and frames, and steam cleans areas in need of inspection or repair. Provides recommendations for fleet operations. Deals with authorized dealers, contractors, and vendors to secure equipment and vehicles. Maintains warranties, licenses, and registrations for all vehicles. Implements a preventative maintenance program for the entire fleet. Assists operations related to snow and ice control, including anti-icing, de-icing, plowing streets, sidewalks, and disposing of snow as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and
ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of the maintenance, operation, and repair of motor equipment of all types (i.e., automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, diesel engines, motors, pumps)
  • Knowledge of the principles of mechanical design; good knowledge of repair costs; ability to make and understand mechanical drawings, shop prints; ability to plan and delegate work to others
  • Ability to act responsibly in an emergency
  • Ability to work with others; ability to manipulate an alpha-numeric keyboard; ability to effectively use computer applications
  • Reliability; sound technical judgment; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EXPERIENCE
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school, or coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance, or completion of an approved training course. Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic. Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher class of driver's license, or the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with residents and employees of Leyden Township.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois Driver's License and CDL License, or ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days
  • Holds, or has the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR certificates.
OTHER SKILLS and
ABILITIES
: Knowledgeable in OSHA and ADA requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work is performed mostly in shop and field settings. Considerable outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land uses and other matters. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, talk, and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The environmental conditions include outdoor weather conditions, which can be wet or humid. The employee will frequently work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; be exposed to bacterial waste, toxic or caustic chemicals; risks of electrical shock and vibration; be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level is moderate.
