Job Description

The City of Geneva has an exciting opportunity for an intern to join our Public Works Fleet Division this summer. This position provides hands-on experience for students currently enrolled in automotive courses. We offer flexible scheduling between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and anticipate this position will work an average of 20 hours per week. If you are an aspiring maintenance technician and want to get exposure to a wide array of fleet vehicles and equipment, this could be the perfect summer opportunity. Performs miscellaneous tasks in the Fleet Division.
Tasks include:
parts ordering and pick up, vehicle drop off and pick up, routine vehicle maintenance checks including oil changes, fuel system inspections, record keeping, and shop maintenance. Total work hours not to exceed more than 20 hours per week.

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and Fleet Maintenance Technicians, the intern will participate in the following: Perform parts ordering for projects and maintain parts inventory. Track parts deliveries and returns. Repair and maintain various small tools and equipment in support of field operations for the City. Pick up and drop off vehicles at various sites and perform parts delivery and pick up when needed. Perform and maintain weekly and monthly shop safety inspections. Track and maintain inspections and repairs. Perform standard vehicle inspections to identify safety and wear concerns. Assist mechanics with light repairs, including but not limited to: Oil and filter change Tire rotation Tire repair/replacement Chassis lubrication, Brake replacement and repair Install equipment for seasonal use, such as plows, salt spreaders, sidewalk equipment, snow tires, and other snow removal equipment. Perform daily and monthly inspections of the underground storage containment system. Enter new vehicle information into the fuel system and troubleshoot fuel dispensing system. Perform minor maintenance and custodial work in the care of the Public Works building. Complete daily written reports. Prepare surplus vehicles for auction (strips vehicle of all City equipment). Attend safety and training meetings. Stock small parts (filters, fuses, nut and bolts). Change drums on fluid dispensing system. Clean shop (empty trash, sweep, sort recyclables). Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Enrolled in an automotive technical institute. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license with the appropriate classifications and endorsements as specified by the Department Head Forklift certification
Knowledge of:
Vehicle and equipment maintenance, problem diagnosis and repair as acquired in advanced training and through hands-on experience.
Skill in:
Using diagnostic tools and equipment, and welding
Mental and Physical Abilities:
The ability to read and use instructions provided in technical service manuals. The ability to complete written reports of repair work. Must be able to stand, sit, walk, run, operate cars and trucks, and operate heavy equipment. Must be able to push, pull, reach, grasp, and lift objects up to 100 pounds frequently. Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, and crawl. Must be able to reach, grasp and hold. Must be able to see, hear, and talk.
Working Conditions:
Work in the garage with heat, no air conditioning.
