Job Summary:
The Level 2 Commercial Vehicle Technician•Van Specialty at Blue Collar Customs is an intermediate-level role focused primarily on the upfitting and customization of commercial vans. Building upon the foundational skills of a Level 1 Technician, this position requires the ability to complete more complex and detail-oriented installations specific to van interiors and fleet configurations. This role involves working with modular and non-vehicle-specific wiring systems, as well as building custom harnesses when required. Technicians are expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of van upfit layouts, including shelving systems, partitions, ladder racks, lighting, and other interior and exterior equipment commonly used in commercial fleet applications. A higher level of mechanical aptitude and problem-solving is required to execute clean, consistent, and repeatable builds that align with Blue Collar Customs' standards. The Level 2 Van Specialty Technician plays a key role in delivering high-quality, production-driven van builds, contributing to overall efficiency, safety, and customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Install interior and exterior van upfit components including shelving systems, partitions, ladder racks, lighting, and storage solutions. Execute installations with precision while following layout drawings, SOPs, and manufacturer guidelines to ensure consistency across fleet builds. Perform electrical installations within vans including lighting, power distribution, and auxiliary systems. Utilize modular and custom wiring solutions as needed, ensuring clean routing, secure connections, and reliable system functionality in line with Blue Collar Customs standards. Prepare vehicles for equipment installation by cleaning and organizing work areas. Ensure surfaces are ready for proper installation and work with the team to inspect vehicles for pre-installation requirements. Assist in maintaining an inventory of tools, equipment, and materials required for installations. Help organize and track materials to ensure smooth workflow during upfitting projects. Inspect installations to ensure they meet Blue Collar Customs' standards. Address any issues under supervision, such as improper installation or alignment, and make corrections as needed. Follow all safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper tool handling. Ensure that work adheres to safety standards and regulations. Work closely with senior technicians and other team members to ensure installations are completed on time. Assist team members as needed, contributing to an efficient and supportive work environment. Actively participate in training and development opportunities provided by Blue Collar Customs to build technical skills and advance within the team. Keep accurate records of completed installations, including time spent on tasks and any issues encountered. Assist in maintaining documentation for workflow processes.
Essential Functions:
Perform accurate and efficient installation of van-specific equipment including shelving, partitions, ladder racks, lighting, and storage systems, ensuring a secure, clean, and professional fit that meets fleet standards. Execute electrical tasks within van platforms, including wiring lighting, auxiliary power, and related components. Follow wiring diagrams, layouts, and SOPs to ensure proper functionality, clean routing, and long-term reliability. Utilize hand and power tools with precision, ensuring correct installation of equipment while adhering to safety protocols. Identify and resolve any issues that arise during installation, such as alignment or fitment challenges, under supervision. Complete assigned tasks efficiently, meeting project deadlines while maintaining quality standards. Carefully inspect all installations, ensuring that all work meets company quality standards and customer expectations. Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of tools and materials. Work closely with senior technicians and team members, contributing to a supportive and efficient workflow. Actively participate in on-the-job training and development, gaining new skills and knowledge relevant to the role. Stay updated on the latest techniques, tools, and materials in the industry to continuously improve the quality of work and maintain a competitive edge. Leverage various technologies and digital tools to enhance the efficiency and precision of installation processes. Stay proficient with emerging technologies and software relevant to role.
Qualification and Skills:
Must possess personal tools required for the job and maintain them in good working order. High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical school training or relevant certifications are a plus. Valid driver's license required, with a clean driving record. Basic understanding of mechanical systems and tools, with the ability to learn and apply new skills in vehicle upfitting. Familiarity with basic electrical systems is a plus but not required; training will be provided. Ability to distinguish between colors to ensure proper installation of wiring and components. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, as well as communicate effectively with team members and supervisors. Willingness to tackle challenges that arise during installation work, seeking guidance when necessary. Strong focus on precision and quality, ensuring all installations meet company standards. Ability to lift heavy equipment, stand for long periods, and work in a hands-on environment. Must be able to work in various positions, including under vehicles or in tight spaces. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to meet project deadlines. Strong ability to collaborate with others, contributing to a positive and productive team environment. Open to gaining new skills and knowledge, with a commitment to continuous improvement and development within the role. Types of Jobs Encountered:
Install systems using non-vehicle-specific modular wiring harnesses or create custom harnesses tailored to specific applications. Complete upfits for van interiors, including shelving, partitions, drawer systems, and other organizational components. Perform full ladder rack installations for commercial trucks, ensuring proper alignment, secure mounting, and functionality.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No direct reports or any level of supervision.
Work Environment:
The Level 2 Technician will primarily work in a well-equipped automotive shop environment. The role involves frequent movement around light and medium-duty commercial trucks, requiring the use of various hand and power tools. This position requires substantial physical activity, including standing for long periods, bending, kneeling, reaching, and occasionally working in tight or awkward positions. Technicians must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and handle heavy or bulky equipment. The shop environment may expose technicians to dust, fumes, and other airborne particles. Technicians will work around vehicles, tools, and equipment that may pose hazards if not handled properly. Proper ventilation and safety equipment will be provided to minimize exposure. The workspace typically has a moderate to high noise level due to machinery, tools, and vehicle operations. Strict adherence to safety protocols is mandatory. This includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection, as well as following all safety procedures to prevent accidents and injuries. While much of the work is performed independently, collaboration with senior technicians and team members is essential for completing installations efficiently and maintaining high-quality standards.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. The normal work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Overtime opportunities are available as the work schedule demands and will be compensated accordingly.
Travel:
Travel for this position is generally limited. Most work is conducted on-site at our facility. Minimal travel may be required for onsite installations, typically only necessary for rework or specific client requests. Occasional overnight travel may be required to attend industry events, training sessions, or other professional development opportunities to enhance skills and stay updated with industry trends.
