Job Description

Perform diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and reconditioning work on customer, donated, program, and sales vehicles to support the mission and daily operations of Second Chances Garage. The B-Level Automotive Technician is expected to independently perform most automotive repairs and maintenance services, diagnose a wide range of vehicle concerns, assist with vehicle reconditioning, and contribute to shop productivity and quality standards. This position plays a critical role in helping provide safe, reliable transportation to individuals and families throughout the community while supporting a positive, mission-focused shop culture.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on domestic and foreign vehicles Independently diagnoses and repairs brake, steering, suspension, cooling, charging, starting, and drivability systems Performs electrical troubleshooting and repairs using scan tools and diagnostic equipment Completes oil changes, fluid exchanges, tire services, alignments, maintenance inspections, and preventive maintenance services Assists with vehicle reconditioning for program and sales vehicles to ensure vehicles meet quality and safety standards Identifies needed repairs and communicates findings clearly to the Operations Manager and service team Recommends additional maintenance and repair services based on vehicle condition and safety concerns Completes repair orders accurately and documents diagnostic procedures, repairs performed, and recommendations Maintains organization and cleanliness of assigned work areas and shop equipment Assists with vehicle movement, jump starts, tire inflation, fueling, and shop workflow as needed Supports apprentices and less experienced technicians through coaching and knowledge sharing Maintains proper use and care of shop tools, equipment, and diagnostic systems Participates in continuing education, certification programs, and training opportunities Treats customers, donors, coworkers, volunteers, and program participants with professionalism and respect Other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works primarily Monday through Friday during regular business hours Full-time position Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, loud noises, and varying weather conditions Fast-paced automotive shop environment with changing priorities and workflow demands

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequently stands, bends, crouches, kneels, lifts, and works in an active shop environment Frequently lifts tools, parts, and equipment up to 75 pounds May work underneath vehicles, operate lifts, and use power tools and diagnostic equipment
QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of three years of automotive repair experience and/or equivalent technical training Ability to independently perform most maintenance and repair services with limited supervision Experience diagnosing and repairing brake, suspension, steering, cooling, electrical, charging, and drivability systems Experience using scan tools, diagnostic software, and service information systems
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work history Automotive technical school, CTC, apprenticeship program, or equivalent vocational training preferred
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES OR LANGUAGES
Valid Maryland Driver's License with insurable driving record required ASE Certifications preferred Willingness to pursue ASE certification and continuing education opportunities
SKILLS OR KNOWLEDGE
Strong knowledge of automotive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair procedures Ability to independently diagnose and repair most vehicle systems Familiarity with automotive shop equipment, diagnostic systems, and service information software Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment Ability to mentor apprentices and support workforce development initiatives Commitment to quality workmanship, customer service, and the mission of
