Job Description
Under the direction of the Fleet Manager or designee, performs skilled repair and maintenance of a diverse variety of specialized and related equipment. The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the position. Perform repairs, maintenance, and major overhauls to a variety of gas or diesel vehicles such as automobiles, equipment, and trucks; involves: assessing, diagnosing, analyzing, recommending, and undertaking overhaul repair, maintenance, and upkeep tasks required based on work orders received. Perform repairs and maintenance on air-cooled equipment such as ATV's generators, lawnmowers, etc. Diagnose problems with equipment, disassemble engines, and examine parts for defects and excessive wear. Perform engine repairs and overhauls as needed, including complete diagnostic and repair of all engine components and vehicle systems using computerized testing equipment.
Involves:
test and validate repairs and maintenance work Perform regularly scheduled, emergency and/or preventative maintenance work. Performs engine tune-ups including replacement of spark plug, distributor caps, ignition wires, fuel filters, etc. Remove and replace transmissions and engines Remove, inspect, install/replace all worn steering/suspension parts such as control arms, tie rods, bushings, ball joints, and center links Diagnose, inspect, and install/replace all work charging and starting components of the electrical systems such as batteries, alternators, fan belts, fuses, wiring, and starters. Diagnose, inspect, and install/replace heating and air conditioning systems and components using proper tools and equipment; while demonstrating proper a/c recovery/recycling, evacuation, and charging techniques Perform testing and diagnosis of electrical systems and components Remove and replace exhaust systems components such as tailpipe, catalytic converters, and resonators Weld and solders Perform rear-end services and repairs Adjust and repair fuel systems, timing, and related components Test drives equipment, and responds to calls for emergency maintenance or emergency wrecker service. Maintain accurate records of materials and time spent on each assigned work order Responsible for safe handling of tools, and maintaining a clean and orderly work area at all times. Maintain and enhance the County's commitment to customer service excellence. Must document clearly and legibly repairs made and parts used. High School Diploma or GED Three (3) years of current, full-time documented mechanic experience in major overhaul, repair, and maintenance of automotive and construction equipment. Ability to read, understand, and apply information from technical manuals, prints, and schematics for troubleshooting and repair. No DUI convictions within the past three years. Valid New Mexico State Driver's License. Must have a good driving record to be insurable for liability purposes.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Use of diagnostic scanners Use of multi-meters Diagnose mechanical, electrical, or electronic system malfunctions; use automotive tools and equipment for maintenance and repair Interpret and analyze service manuals, technical data, and information for decision-making and working purposes that may include the need to take action in stressful situations. Effective communication; and establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with others. Use of automotive tools and equipment for maintenance and repair interpret and analyze general office practices and methods, principles, practices, tools, and materials of the mechanic's trade. Occupational hazards and safety precautions used in vehicle maintenance and repair operations. Interpret parts and supplies needed to perform a variety of maintenance and repair Interpret and analyze service manuals, technical data, and information for decision-making and work purposes that may include the need to take action in stressful situations. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Follow written instructions and work independently with little supervision. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with the public, co-workers, and subordinates. Proper safety precautions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to follow written instructions and work independently. Responsible for knowing and abiding by all Bargaining Unit Contract, Road Department, and Grant County Policies and Procedures. Must be willing to work after hours and weekends if necessary.Safety:
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately. Maintain facility and maintenance records for OSHA, Department of Health (DOH), and annual equipment inspections. Ensure that needed repairs are performed or equipment is removed from service. Comply with Grant County Employee Manual, Departmental Policies and Procedures, and Bargaining Unit Contract. Perform basic mathematical calculations. Able to comprehend, read, write, and communicate in English Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules. Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and other protective equipment as required Able to perform heavy physical work involving bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and squatting; ability to lift, move carry, or re-position items weighing up to 200 pounds, using supportive equipment or help; ability While performing the duties of the job, the employee involves heavy physical work involving bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing reaching and squatting. Able to lift, move, carry or re-position items weighing up to 100 pounds; occasionally will push/pull items that weigh in excess of 100 pounds using supportive equipment or help; ability to move around the maintenance area; ability to enter/exit vehicles. Subject to call out during off working hours. Work surface may be wet, dry natural ground or asphalt on smooth and/or rough terrain. Ability to maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in safety practices and recognizing hazards Essential duties are performed in a multi-bay open garage on smooth concrete slab. May be exposed to fumes, dust, grease and fluids, which may cause burns or irritate the skin. Work is performed in a work environment of varying environmental conditions, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity. Regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, safe lifting and carrying practices; and safe handling and storage practices for a variety of maintenance tools and supplies, equipment and machines.
