Job Title:
Automotive Technician - Heavy-Duty Prototype & Instrumentation Support This role supports heavy-duty vehicles at a test track in Madras, working closely with engineers to prepare vehicles, components, and systems for strain gauge instrumentation and testing. The position is highly hands-on and technical, ideal for an automotive or mechanical technician who is comfortable with mechanical work as well as wiring, basic electronics, and instrumentation-related tasks. You will help build and support a fleet of prototype autonomous trucks, focusing on both mechanical and electrical systems while contributing directly to next-generation vehicle development. Responsibilities Prepare heavy-duty vehicles and components for strain gauge instrumentation in support of engineering test programs. Install, route, and securely fasten cables, wiring, and harnesses required for strain testing and other instrumentation activities. Remove axles and perform other mechanical disassembly and reassembly tasks as needed to enable instrumentation access and component changes. Support engineers with equipment setup, instrumentation preparation, and overall test readiness for prototype vehicles. Assist in replacing mechanical and electrical components and ensure all parts are properly staged, organized, and ready for instrumentation teams. Work collaboratively with engineering teams throughout real-to-virtual transition workflows, ensuring accurate mechanical and electrical configurations. Follow detailed procedures and work instructions to deliver precise, reliable instrumentation support and vehicle preparation. Use hand tools and follow mechanical schematics to perform repairs, assembly, and adjustments on vehicle systems and components. Troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical issues related to wiring, sensors, and harnesses on prototype autonomous trucks. Contribute to a positive team culture by communicating clearly, sharing information, and supporting a collaborative, growth-oriented environment. Essential Skills Prior automotive or mechanical technician experience working on vehicles or comparable mechanical systems. Strong mechanical aptitude, including experience with axle removal, component preparation, repair, and assembly. Experience running and routing wiring, cables, or similar technical harnesses in a vehicle or equipment environment. Ability to read and work from basic mechanical or electrical schematics when performing repairs or installations. Hands-on experience using standard hand tools for mechanical and electrical work. High attention to detail with the ability to follow methodical processes and procedures accurately. Ability to troubleshoot and assist with diagnosis of mechanical and basic electrical issues, including wiring and sensor-related concerns. Comfort working closely with engineers in a technical, prototype-focused environment. Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering and test teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on heavy-duty vehicles, trucks, or commercial vehicles. Exposure to prototype vehicle builds, especially involving autonomous or advanced technology systems. Familiarity with strain gauge instrumentation or similar test and measurement setups. Experience working with electronics, sensors, and vehicle wiring harnesses. Background in automotive repair or maintenance in a shop or test environment. Growth mindset with a positive attitude and willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and processes. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, hands-on engineering and testing environment focused on innovation. Work Environment This position is fully onsite at a test track facility in Madras, supporting a fleet of next-generation prototype autonomous trucks. You will work in a highly collaborative environment alongside engineers and other technicians, with a strong culture of teamwork, good attitudes, and a growth mindset. The work is hands-on and may involve time in both shop and track settings, including vehicle bays and test areas where mechanical and electrical work, wiring, and instrumentation activities take place. You will regularly use standard hand tools, work with wiring harnesses and sensors, and support real-world vehicle testing. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Redmond, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $36.00/hr.
