  • The Opportunity
  • This role is on a hybrid schedule in either our Detroit, MI, Charlotte, NC or Lewisville, TX office , in office with some remote work.
The Senior Counsel will serve as a legal advisor for the firm's automotive financial consumer servicing business, leveraging some expertise in consumer finance, automotive lending, and regulatory compliance. This role will provide strategic counsel on routine and complex transactions, regulatory matters, and risk management.
  • The Work Itself
  • Serve as lead legal advisor on matters related to the servicing of automotive consumer retail installment sales contracts, direct loans, and leases, including repossession, collections, certificate of title, complaint handling, military lending, seizure impound and fraud matters, and eligibility of aftermarket products refunds.
  • Oversee compliance with federal and state consumer protection laws and regulations (e.g., TILA, ECOA, FCRA, FDCPA, UCC, CFPB guidance), and advise on regulatory developments.
  • Develop, implement, and enhance policies and procedures in partnership with compliance, risk, and business teams.
  • Provide strategic guidance to management on legal risks, regulatory trends, and business initiatives.
  • Manage relationships with outside counsel, consult on servicing litigation, regulatory inquiries, and audits.
  • Represent the firm in negotiations, regulatory meetings, and industry forums.
  • Respond to complex consumer complaints, regulatory investigations, and enforcement actions.
  • The Skills You Bring
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Law Degree from a reputable law school.
  • Bar membership in good standing required to practice law in designated/required jurisdiction.
  • 7 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; active license to practice law.
  • 3-5 years of legal experience in consumer financial services, automotive finance, or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in federal and state consumer finance laws and regulations.
  • Significant experience with contract negotiation, transactional work, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic legal counsel to senior leadership.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Prior in-house counsel experience at a financial services or automotive finance company.
  • Familiarity with technology platforms, data privacy, and cybersecurity issues in financial services.
