This position will function as a VERT II (Vehicle/ Equipment Repair Technician Level II) within the Washington Equipment Shop in Beaufort County. Employees perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive, heavy equipment as well as power tools. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform skilled mechanical work including but not limited to the following systems: Preventive maintenance, brakes (air and hydraulic), steering; tires and tubes; wheels, rims, and hubs; transmission (auto and manual); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit, hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments and gages; and air intake system. Competencies:
Salary Grade and Salary Range:
NC08/ Recruitment Range $39,244 - $68,679. Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment. Knowledge of basic welding principles and application. Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring. Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses. Experience using a computer to obtain diagnostic and repair information.
Additional Job Description/Minimum Education and Experience of Requirement:
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety Toe shoes are needed.
Note:
Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F. For more
