Job Description

Kershaw County Fire and Kershaw County EMS are seeking a highly skilled Vehicle Maintenance Technician to manage and maintain our diverse fleet of emergency response vehicles. This is a unique, split-duty position serving both departments. The ideal candidate is a dedicated diesel mechanic who takes pride in ensuring that the vehicles saving lives in our community are always mission-ready. As the first dedicated technician for this joint venture, you will play a pivotal role in the future transition from a single-person operation to a potential Vehicle Maintenance Division.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 40

Perform Repairs and Complete Diagnostic Troubleshooting:
Perform complex repairs on gasoline and diesel vehicles (Fire Engines, Rescues, Quint, Ambulances, Brush Trucks, and Support Units). Including work on diesel/gasoline engines, electronically controlled transmissions, ride height suspension systems, fire pumps, suspension linkages, steering linkages, kingpins, wheel bearings, tires, airbrake systems (including anti-lock braking systems), hydraulic brake systems (including ABS), multiplexing electrical systems, lighting systems, heating and air conditioning systems. Follow original equipment manufacturer (OEM) diagnostic processes and procedures—such as wiring diagrams, diagnostic trees, repair and parts manuals, and schematics—to perform troubleshooting on vehicles, and/or equipment. Use diagnostic software, multimeters, specialized tools, test gauges, and integrated on-board maintenance systems to identify defects. Once the issue is identified, determine an effective repair method and complete the repair to OEM specifications. Ensure that, upon completion, the vehicle or equipment is properly repaired and safe for its intended use. Actively contribute to the identification and reporting of safety issues or concerns encountered during the performance of essential job functions. Maintain accurate records of service and repair activities within fleet maintenance software. 40% -
Conduct Preventive Maintenance:
Perform preventive maintenance services and safety inspections on a variety of gasoline and diesel vehicles. Address and complete any necessary repairs for defects identified during the preventive maintenance process before returning the vehicle or bus to service. Use fleet maintenance software to complete electronic check sheets for each service performed. Ensure that the vehicle is operating properly and is in a safe condition for its intended use prior to returning it to service. 5% - Assist in installation and
Repair of Specialized Equipment:
Assist in installation of specialized equipment such as cellular data systems/modems/Wi-Fi, emergency lighting, two-way radios, computer/mobile data terminal mounts, fare collection systems, ITS, GPS equipment, body add-ons, and decals. Troubleshoot, repair, or replace these items as needed. 5% -
Assist Administrative Functions:
Schedule and coordinate equipment service or repairs. Schedule and coordinate equipment transport for specialized service or warranty repairs that must be sent to outside vendors. Work directly with the Operations Chiefs of both Fire and EMS to identify, source, and order necessary parts and supplies. Maintain accurate service records for all vehicles to ensure compliance and safety standards. Provide reports as needed of costs effects of Aging Fleet along with Costs analysis Work with the Chiefs of both Departments to prepare fleet maintenance budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

WORK CONDITIONS
Working location varies, including mobile locations and a fleet shop. Work under adverse conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and alone at night; wear a designated uniform or Personal Protective Equipment and maintain a neat and clean appearance. Must be able to work on call, including holidays and weekends, work scheduled and emergency overtime, and report for duty in an emergency.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Required - A high school diploma or equivalent, Minimum of 21 years of age. Must pass a criminal background check. Must have and maintain a good driving record and a valid South Carolina driver's license. Must also pass drug screening. Over two (2) years of experience in hands-on vehicle repair to include at least one (1) year of experience working on emergency vehicles. ASE certifications related to Heavy Duty Trucks, Transit, and Automobiles. Preferred - Prior experience or certification as an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is highly preferred. Willingness to be sent to specialized Training. ASE Master Certifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements :
Constantly requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting and handling/grasping. Very heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, exerting 50-100 pounds frequently, or exerting 20-50 pounds constantly.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange pertinent and vital information to co-workers. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from the supervisor. Includes giving instructions and assignments to subordinates.

Requires the ability to read and prepare a variety of documents and reports using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Has the ability to speak with co-workers and the general public with poise, voice control and confidence. Must be able to speak effectively to large groups. Voice and language must be clearly expressed so that radio transmission can be clearly understood.

Has the ability to learn and apply principles of mechanical and electronic systems—such as complex engine diagnostics and hydraulic theory—to solve problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization is limited (e.g., custom retrofits or field repairs); can interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written service manuals, oral briefings, wiring diagrams, or maintenance schedules.
Verbal Aptitude :
Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions. Is able to communicate by way of two-way radio.
Numerical Aptitude :
Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages and decimals; determine time and weight; and apply algebraic principles.
Form/Spatial Aptitude :
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination :
Must have excellent hand/eye coordination. Requires the ability to operate motor vehicles.
Manual Dexterity :
Requires the ability to manipulate a wide array of specialized tools and components, ranging from delicate sensors and fuel injectors to heavy-duty fasteners and chassis hardware. Must be able to precisely twist, push, pull, and torque components in confined engine compartments or undercarriages. Must possess maximum levels of foot/hand/eye coordination to operate diagnostic equipment, maneuver heavy lifting machinery, and perform intricate repairs while maintaining strict safety standards.
Color Discrimination :
Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament :
Has the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. The member needs to relate to people in situations involving more than receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under high stress when confronted with emergency, dangerous, and life-threatening situations.
Physical Communication :
Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to speak clearly and must be able to hear low, monotone sounds such as whispers, blood pressure and lung sounds, etc.
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Knowledge of Job :
Requires the mastery of complex, mission-critical systems unique to emergency apparatus, including high-pressure fire pumps, aerial ladder hydraulics, and advanced multiplex electrical systems. Must have the diagnostic acumen to troubleshoot integrated patient-care power systems in ambulances and PTO-driven components in fire engines where failure is not an option. Must be able to interpret highly specific NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards and ambulance specifications alongside standard OEM service manuals. Quality of work : Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interface with all County departments and divisions, co-workers and customers, and the general public.
