March 2026 SUMMARY The mechanic is under the direct supervision of the Public Works Deputy Director and the Shop Supervisor. Work is performed in maintenance, repair and servicing of motor vehicle and other equipment.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITY
Performs preventive maintenance on gasoline, propane and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Performs minor and major repairs on all vehicles and equipment. Overhauls engines, carburetors, brake systems and other automotive areas as needed. Performs diagnostic testing on engines and electrical systems. Paints and refinishes various types of equipment. Performs welding as required. Completes work orders on maintenance performed. Consults Shop Supervisor on parts needed from major repairs and makes recommendations. Cleans work area. Repairs tires when instructed by supervisor. Required to work overtime as needed. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of principles and techniques involved in maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. Knowledge of principles and techniques involved in maintenance of equipment. Knowledge and skill in the use of tools and equipment involved in mechanical and body work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to work independently and make decisions. Knowledge of City and department rules, regulations and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, representatives of other agencies and the general public. Ability to maintain a good attendance record. Knowledge and ability to work with computers and software programs that are relevant to the position. Valid Tennessee Driver's License.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED. Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicle and equipment repair including hydraulics. Welding experience preferred. Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADA REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements - Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Regular performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds and occasionally very heavy items up to one hundred pounds; may involve the complex operation of gasoline, electric or diesel-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls. May work in adverse environmental conditions. Sensory Requirements - Tasks require visual perception and discrimination including color and depth. Tasks require perception and discrimination of odor and sound.
