Summary:
Repairs, maintains, and overhauls SPAN vehicles - buses, vans, and automobiles - on a routine and as needed basis. Also performs routine maintenance of the building, property, and facilities. Performs the work in-house personally or contracts and coordinates through a third-party vendor. This is a safety sensitive position, as identified by the Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Authority, and is subject to routine testing, training, and certifications. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Performs primary tasks related to the repair, service, and maintenance of vehicles and the general facilities according to a pre-determined preventative schedule and on an as needed basis. Vehicle maintenance includes, but not limited to, disassembly, inspection, operating tools/equipment, rewiring of various systems, aligning brakes/front end, fixing leaks, replacing/repairing accessories, and repairing/mending external and internal pieces of vehicle frame/body. Facility maintenance includes, but not limited to, replacing light bulbs, repairing fixtures, light electrical work, repairing interior and exterior of the building, light plumbing/HVAC, moving furniture, light landscaping, hauling trash, pest control, and painting. Plans and schedules work procedures, coordinating with Transportation/Maintenance Supervisor. Makes recommendations to Transportation/Maintenance Supervisor regarding processes for the maintenance programs to create efficiencies and cost saving measures. Assists the Transportation/Maintenance Supervisor with preparing the departmental budget, as well as various reports. Recommends equipment and tool purchases for the transportation/maintenance departments. Orders supplies for shop, vehicles, and bus washer, within authority limits and in accordance with policy. Assists in the transport of vehicles and drivers as needed related to accidents/incidents and mechanical failures. Provides phone and physical off-site support to drivers who have mechanical issues with their vehicles. Sticks underground fuel tanks and completes fuel usage reports as required. Negotiates and schedules outsourced vehicle and facility repair/maintenance, coordinating with Transportation/Maintenance Supervisor. Enters work orders and maintenance performed into computer system. Schedule vehicles for inspections, coordinating with Transportation/Maintenance Supervisor. Other duties as assigned.Requirements:
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED). One year certificate from a trade school in auto mechanics or similar field plus at least one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of education/training and experience.Required Licensing:
Must have and be able to maintain a valid Texas State Driver's License and obtain a Class C Commercial Driver's License.Key Skills and Abilities:
Ability to fluently read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language in order to accurately interpret documents and write reports and correspondence. Must pass required initial and annual trainings for this position. Includes, but not limited to, Defensive Driving and Drug and Alcohol. Must be able to pass required medical physicals or certifications and drug/alcohol testing. Knowledge of and ability to safely operate a variety of electrical, hydraulic, and hand-powered tools/equipment required to complete the essential functions of this position. Appropriately groomed and dressed in a clean and properly maintained SPAN uniform. Able to develop and maintain constructive relationships with co-workers and vendors. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in most commonly used units of measure. Must be able to compute rate, ratio, and percentages. Ability to pay attention to detail. Ability to keep tools, equipment, materials, and workspaces organized and clean. General understanding of basic negotiation skills necessary to cost effectively source materials and services. Ability to adhere to a schedule and effectively manage time.Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct reports include maintenance personnel, such as bus washer and mechanic helpers. Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive. Participates in hiring, training, discipline, and termination of employees as needed.Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; hazardous/dangerous materials; risk of radiation; and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high or precarious positions. The noise level in the environment is loud. Some driving required.Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or lay down. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 100 pounds. Certain tasks require significant physical exertion, bearing substantial weight, or unusual movement.The vision requirements include:
