Job Description This position is located at 432 Shea Drive, Chesapeake VA. Are you mechanically inclined? Enjoy problem-solving? Prefer working outdoors? If so, the Customer Service Mechanic position may be the perfect fit for you! The Customer Service Mechanic plays a vital role in the field operations of the Department of Public Utilities. This position handles a range of duties during and after City Hall hours, serving as a first responder for water-related customer concerns. From inspecting leaks and performing emergency water shutoffs to supporting meter reading and maintenance, the Customer Service Mechanic is essential to ensuring safe, accurate, and dependable service.
Key Responsibilities:
Respond promptly to customer service requests, including leak inspections and emergency water shutoffs. Assist day mechanics with repairs, maintenance, and installations as needed. Support meter reading operations, including performing re-reads and route assistance. Conduct water meter changes and turn water services on or off for residential and commercial customers. Maintain accurate records of all work completed and submit reports to supervisor at the end of each shift. Provide courteous and professional customer service while addressing water-related concerns. Drive and maintain a city-issued vehicle in accordance with city policies.
Working Conditions & Requirements:
Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be able to work independently and manage time effectively to complete all assigned tasks each night, regardless of duration. Some Saturday shifts are required. Must be available to respond during severe weather events, emergencies, or other critical situations as directed by the department. VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards .
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties. Preferred Qualifications 4-6 months of direct experience or related work in water meter customer service mechanic work. Proficiency in using hand tools in a field or utility setting. Experience in reading, servicing, or maintaining water meters, including route-based meter reading. Familiarity with commercial-sized water meters and their operation.
