Job Description
Performs difficult technical work on a variety of automotive, medium/heavy trucks and equipment, school buses and emergency vehicles; does related work as required. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Manager.
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Regular, reliable attendance necessary. Operates a City vehicle in the performance of the job duties. Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment that following manufactures, federal and state specification requirements. Performs Virginia State inspection. Perform proper diagnosing and repair techniques on fleet vehicles and equipment. Consults technical reference documentation such as manufacturer's manuals and parts manuals, informational web sites for technical information necessary for repairs. Prepares history files, maintains work logs and maintenance sheets. Makes repairs on vehicles and equipment in all areas including engines, engine performance, transmissions, drive train, steering, suspensions, brakes (air/hydraulic), electrical/electronic systems, heating/air conditioning systems, fuel systems, hydraulic pumps/hoses, body mechanical and others as needed. Performs repairs and installs on emergency vehicles (lights, pumps, related fire equipment, etc.). Diagnoses and repairs air compressors, pumps, small engines, grounds maintenance and related equipment. Services chain saws, tractors, weed eaters, pumps and other small equipment. Fabrication and welding preferred. Required to enter time and information into computer database daily. May be required to work on-call during off-hours for emergency assistance. This may require making service calls and repairs vehicles/equipment in the field. Assists with snow and ice control. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED, ability to read and write Requires two years of experience in vehicle repair/maintenance setting. Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Licenses and/orCertifications:
Valid Virginia Class B Commercial drivers' license with an S endorsement strongly preferred upon hire; however, required within 6 months of hire. Valid Virginia state inspection license strongly preferred upon hire; however, must begin process within first year of hire. Current 609 Air Conditioning Certification strongly preferred upon hire; however, required within 6 months of hire. Incumbent subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment including electronic diagnostic equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, medium/heavy trucks, school buses, emergency vehicles and equipment. General knowledge and skill in the use and operation of Windows operating systems and Microsoft office programs. Thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake lathe, tire mounting, tire balancing and welding equipment. The ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of vehicles and equipment. The ability to detect any worn or broken automotive parts by inspection, keep records of repairs and service operations, make reports, adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems, interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, installation and repair charts. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions accurately and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed indoors but is exposed to temperamental changes (warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc.) or extreme noise, odors, heights, dust, fumes and hazardous materials such as petroleum products like gas, diesel fuel, oil, grease and solventsEssential Physical Activities:
Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.Typical weight handled:
