Job Title:
Diesel and Emergency Vehicle Mechanic Job Description This role focuses on inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing diesel trucks and fire trucks, including their engine, electrical, brake, hydraulic, and related systems. You will perform both in-shop and mobile maintenance and repair work at various fire stations across Oregon and Washington, ensuring vehicles remain safe, reliable, and compliant with all relevant standards and regulations. Responsibilities Conduct thorough inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel trucks and fire trucks, including engine systems, electrical systems, brake systems, hydraulics, and related components. Perform mobile work such as preventive maintenance, repairs, and pump testing at various fire stations in Oregon and Washington, including occasional overnight stays with company-paid expenses. Carry out routine maintenance tasks, including fluid changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and detailed component inspections. Repair or replace damaged, worn, or malfunctioning parts in accordance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and best practices. Use diagnostic equipment and tools to troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues and develop effective repair solutions. Collaborate closely with team members to resolve challenging technical problems and share knowledge to improve overall service quality. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of repairs, maintenance activities, inspections, and parts usage to support fleet maintenance tracking. Monitor and manage parts inventory related to assigned work, ensuring required components and materials are available when needed. Perform safety inspections of equipment and vehicles and prepare required safety documentation and inspection reports. Adhere to all safety protocols, shop rules, and regulatory requirements to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others. Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies and procedures in the performance of daily duties. Communicate effectively with supervisors and peers regarding vehicle status, repair needs, timelines, and any safety concerns. Perform other related duties as required to support the maintenance and readiness of the vehicle fleet. Essential Skills 5-10 years of hands-on mechanic experience, preferably with diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicles. Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues. Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment, as well as a wide range of hand and power tools commonly used in diesel and heavy equipment repair. Solid knowledge of diesel engine systems, including fuel, cooling, and exhaust systems. Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, and actuators. Experience with electrical systems, including light electrical diagnostics and repairs on trucks and emergency vehicles. Understanding of air brake systems, rear brakes, and chassis components. Ability to interpret and apply information from technical manuals, service bulletins, and schematics to perform accurate repairs and maintenance. Experience with fleet maintenance practices and preventive maintenance programs. Ability to perform troubleshooting and diagnosis on trucks, heavy equipment, and emergency vehicles. Basic welding skills for repairs related to vehicle components and chassis when required. Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple work orders and meet deadlines. Effective written and verbal communication skills for documentation and communication with peers and supervisors. Ability and willingness to travel within Oregon and Washington for mobile work assignments. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability to provide and maintain your own hand tools and toolbox suitable for diesel and emergency vehicle repair. Additional Skills & Qualifications ASE certifications are highly desirable and demonstrate advanced competency in automotive and diesel repair. EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications are a significant plus and strongly preferred for work on fire apparatus and emergency vehicles. Experience working specifically on fire trucks, wildland fire rigs, and similar emergency vehicles. Background in hydraulics, pneumatics, and pump systems used on emergency and heavy-duty vehicles. Experience with steering gears, steering columns, and related chassis components. Familiarity with pump testing procedures for fire apparatus. Comfort working independently in the field as well as collaboratively in a shop environment. Willingness to pursue additional ASE and EVT certifications with employer support. Why Work Here? Work Environment You will work primarily in a shop and warehouse environment filled with a variety of emergency and heavy-duty vehicles, including fire trucks, wildland fire rigs, and new garbage trucks. The role also includes mobile work at fire stations throughout Oregon and Washington, where you will perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and pump testing on-site. The standard schedule is a day shift from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., operating on four 10-hour days, with optional overtime available on Fridays. The environment is hands-on and tool-intensive, involving diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools, and occasional welding. Work is performed around large vehicles and equipment, with a strong emphasis on safety practices, proper use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to all shop and field safety procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sumner, WA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $47.00/hr.
