This role is the operational anchor of our shop — you will refurbish donated bikes to a high standard while mentoring and training volunteers, providing real-time guidance and safety feedback to help them develop their skills. Ideal candidates are technically proficient, patient teachers, and genuinely excited about making cycling accessible to all.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the operational lead of daily shop activities, supporting staff and volunteers Train, mentor, and provide constructive feedback to volunteers, including safety inspections of their completed work Refurbish donated bikes with a high attention to safety, quality, and rider comfort Diagnose and perform repairs across all aspects of bike technology — drivetrains, brakes, wheels, and bearings Assist with on-the-spot community repairs, ranging from flat repairs to component replacements and bearing adjustments Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming shop environment Represent Upcycle Bikes' mission and values in every interaction
Skills and Qualifications:
Required:
Demonstrated bicycle mechanic experience (2+ years preferred); ability to perform complete tune-ups and repairs without supervision, including drivetrain work, cable and component replacement, derailleur and bearing adjustments, and (ideally) fork replacement Availability to work Monday through Thursday, 9am-5pm, year-round — consistent, year-round hours are a core requirement of this position; this is not a seasonal role Physical ability to move and transport bicycles, including intermittent lifting of up to 50 lbs above waist level Preferred qualifications: Experience mentoring or training others in a hands-on environment Ability to fit a bicycle to a customer based on size, riding style, and personal preference Comfortable in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with volunteers and community members Curious and adaptable — willing to both learn and teach, and able to pick up new tools and software quickly First-hand cycling experience and a genuine enthusiasm for making bikes approachable to all
Position Compensation and Benefits:
