Job Description

Position Summary The Cemetery Grounds Maintenance Technician is responsible for the care, presentation, and upkeep of cemetery property. This role ensures that all grounds are maintained with respect, cleanliness, and attention to detail, creating a peaceful and well-kept environment for families and visitors year-round. This position requires reliability, physical endurance, and the ability to work in Alaska's seasonal conditions, including summer grounds work and winter snow management.
Key Responsibilities:
Grounds Maintenance & Appearance
  • Mow, trim, edge, and maintain all grassy areas during the growing season
  • Rake, clean, and remove leaves, debris, and seasonal waste
  • Maintain roadways, walkways, and common areas
  • Ensure headstones and markers are clean, level, and properly aligned
  • Maintain flowerbeds, landscaping, and decorative elements Burial & Site Preparation
  • Assist with grave layout, marking, and preparation
  • Open and close graves using proper equipment and safety procedures
  • Set up and break down for burial services
  • Backfill, seed, and restore gravesites following services Equipment Operation & Maintenance
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as mowers, trimmers, loaders, and small excavation equipment
  • Perform routine maintenance and report equipment issues promptly
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are clean and stored properly Winter Operations
  • Snow plowing and removal from roads, walkways, and service areas
  • Ice control using sand/salt as needed
  • Maintain accessibility for services and visitors in extreme weather conditions General Duties
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Interact respectfully with families and visitors
  • Follow company policies and safety procedures
  • Assist with other duties as assigned Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Groundskeeping or outdoor labor experience preferred
  • Equipment operation experience is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must have reliable transportation to/from work Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to perform physically demanding labor Schedule & Work Environment
  • Full-time; may include weekends
  • Start first or second week of May
  • Seasonal workload changes
  • On-call or flexible hours may be required
