About National City Christian Church Foundation National City Christian Church, located on historic Thomas Circle in the heart of Washington, DC, is the national church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Designed by renowned architect John Russell Pope and completed in 1930, our building is a local landmark and national meetinghouse maintained by the National City Christian Church Foundation. On Sunday mornings, we are the site of a thriving congregation. During the week, we provide office space for nine tenant organizations, host concerts and events in our sanctuary, and welcome a variety of groups that use our common spaces. Position Summary The Building Maintenance Technician supports the Building Superintendent in the day-to-day maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the church's historic facilities and grounds. This is a hands-on, junior-level role ideal for a motivated individual looking to grow their building maintenance career while caring for a nationally significant landmark property. The position involves a variety of general maintenance tasks spanning custodial work, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, landscaping, and custodial work. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of church buildings, including grounds. Perform daily cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash and recycling removal, and restocking restrooms. Maintain schedule for regular deep cleans of sanctuary, bathrooms, common spaces, stairwells, and all public-facing areas to ensure a welcoming environment for worship, events, and community gatherings. Perform routine preventive maintenance on building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire/life safety equipment. Respond to work orders and maintenance requests in a timely manner. Perform minor carpentry, painting, drywall repair, and general handyman tasks as assigned. Assist with seasonal maintenance tasks such as snow removal, salt application, leaf removal, and lawn care. Maintain professional, responsive working relationships with building tenants, vendors, and contractors; communicate clearly on scheduling, access, and building needs to support smooth day-to-day operations. Staff the front desk when needed and perform basic administrative tasks as assigned, such as sorting mail and printing documents. Greet and assist visitors, members, and tenants with a courteous and professional demeanor; serve as an approachable, helpful presence in the building during daily operations and events. Handle event setup including room configuration, table and chair setup and breakdown, AV equipment placement, signage, and post-event cleanup and restoration of spaces. Monitor and restock cleaning supplies, paper products, and event materials; maintain organized storage areas. Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Superintendent, Executive Minister, or Senior Minister and President. QualificationsRequired High school diploma or GED equivalent. 1-3 years of experience in building and grounds maintenance, custodial work, or a related trade. Basic working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry systems. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively. Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks including bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts. Preferred Experience maintaining historic, institutional, or large commercial buildings. Familiarity with building automation systems, fire alarm panels, and elevator maintenance protocols. EPA Section 608 certification or willingness to obtain. DC Third Class or higher Engineer's License, or willingness to pursue. CPR/First Aid certification. Valid driver's license. Experience with event venue setup and operations. Experience in hospitality or customer service. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Work is performed primarily indoors within a 30,000 sq. ft. historic building, with regular outdoor tasks on church grounds. The role involves exposure to a variety of conditions including dust, cleaning chemicals, noise, temperature extremes, and confined spaces. The position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb stairs and ladders, and lift or carry materials weighing up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis.
