SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

(TITLE 32), WG-5801-10, you will troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, comb, tactical and automotive vehicles. Utilize embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nure or extent of repair. Remove and disassemble engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Make the approprie repairs, overhaul, or modificions in accordance with the proper repair specificions and procedures. Conduct readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associed equipment supported by the activity.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Work is performed in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. There is frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching; or working on top of, under, and in tight compartments or cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items, unassisted, weighing up to 40 pounds; and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May be required to work from ladders or work plforms varying heights.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed both inside and outside. When inside, the incumbent is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, the incumbent is exposed to bad weher, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. The incumbent is frequently exposed to irritions or discomfort from dust, he, fumes, and hard damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Often exposed to the possibility of falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment; and skin irritions from acid, fluids, and lubricants. Uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hs, hard-toe shoes, respirors, and protective clothing, which may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods. : Must have experience or training which demonstres knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventive maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

: WG10 Must have least 18 months of experience or training leading to a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operion, and working relionships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of comb, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment; experience diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying a variety of comb, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment; experience with electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumic, and other non-mechanical systems th have a functional relionship and effect on the operion of mechanical systems; experience with hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumic, electrical, and electronic controls; experience with electronics, sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards; experience repairing or overhauling major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems and accessories, fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.

TEMPORARY

PROMOTION- For Title 32 and/or Title 5 selectees only: This is an obliged position (incumbent is on a military tour). If a permanent employee in Title 32 and/or Title 5 excepted civil service accepts this position, he/she will retain their permanent stus AND return to their previous Title 32 and/or Title 5 position once the incumbent returns from military duty. If the military tour member, who has reemployment rights to this position, does not exercise his/her reemployment rights within 5 years, the selected individual may remain in this position without further competition.
