Job Description

Anticipated starting wage is $47,233.87/year. Full salary range is $47,233.87 - $68,697.04.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor perform a variety of journeyman level work, maintenance and repair duties in one or more of the park trades to maintain and repair parks; perform skilled to semi-skilled maintenance duties in trade areas outside of specialty; perform additional duties as assigned; assist in the purchase of supplies and equipment and maintain records related to work performed. All duties will be performed in accordance with maintenance standards.
Essential Duties:
Act as lead staff on projects involving specialty and assist with other projects outside of specialty; direct other staff as necessary or required. Install, maintain and repair systems following blueprints, shop drawings, sketches, schematics, manuals and applicable codes. Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, machinery and hand and power tools used in the building, construction and grounds maintenance trades including trucks, backhoe, boom truck, chain saw, transit, mower, edger, rototiller, sod cutter, weed eater, fork lift, sweepers, welding equipment and snow plow. Perform skilled duties to landscape and maintain parks and cemetery facilities; work from blueprints, shop drawings, schematics and sketches; lead or assist other City maintenance personnel or seasonal employees as assigned. Implement and perform a variety of preventive maintenance programs for City facilities, equipment, systems and machinery to include cleaning and replacement of parts as needed; perform utility consumption evaluations; provide recommendations for utility conservation improvements where appropriate. Participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; participate in building construction, masonry and playground installation projects. Inspect and evaluate needed construction or repair; estimate time, materials and cost requirements; assist in acquisition of proper materials at the best price; complete purchasing documents and recommend purchase of selected materials, equipment and parts; prepare and maintain records and reports related to work performed. Perform a variety of seasonal grounds maintenance duties such as leaf removal, snow removal, deicing of stairways and sidewalks, and the installation and removal of seasonal decorations; assist with the winterization and start-up of irrigation systems as necessary. Prepare athletic fields for activities; mark with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restrictive lines according to established procedures; grade and water in-fields and build mounds according to specification. Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED certificate and any combination of work/education representing 2 years' experience in the grounds maintenance field and turf management and/or pesticide application. Valid Driver's License and valid State of Idaho Pesticide Applicator's License; or the ability to obtain both of these licenses within six months of employment.
Knowledge & Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE OF
Operation and proper maintenance of tools, equipment, materials, procedures and machinery used in the horticulture, turf management and arboricultural and park maintenance trades. The application of pesticides in accordance with State and Federal rules and regulations. Oral and written communication skills. Health and safety practices, regulations and procedures. Proper lifting techniques. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
ABILITY TO
D Design and implement horticultural, turf management and arboricultural techniques and skills in the construction and maintenance of City parks and cemetery. Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair in trade areas outside of specialty. Work independently with little direction or as a member of a crew. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate and work effectively with others. Estimate time, materials and labor needed for project completion. Apply current horticultural, turf management, arboricultural and pesticide technology within established rules, laws and accepted trade practices. Perform heavy physical labor and lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
Working Conditions:
Subject to indoor, outdoor and shop environments; driving from site to site to conduct work; seasonal heat, cold, temperature changes and extreme weather conditions; noise from equipment operation; exposure to pesticides, fertilizers and other industrial chemicals. Physical demands include heavy lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; standing and walking for extended periods of time; climbing and bending at the waist; walking over rough and uneven surfaces; crawling, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing, climbing ladders and working at heights; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power tools and equipment; and sight to observe and effect needed repairs. Exposure to working on ladders or scaffolding; working in cramped or restrictive chambers; working around, and with, heavy machinery having moving parts; fumes from vehicles and equipment operation; dust, dirt, oil/grease, gases and pollen.
