CONSTRUCTION HANDYMAN
Definition Manual work supporting the work of skilled tradesmen on construction, reconstruction, repair, and maintenance projects; all other related work, as required. Supervision Works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Building Maintenance or their designee, receiving assignments daily and following departmental rules, regulations and policies; duties require the ability to perform operations to complete assigned task, or tasks, according to a prescribed time schedule; refers unusual problems to supervisors. Performs functions which are generally well defined. Work Environment Most work is performed outside, with frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions and with seasonal exposure to unpleasant working conditions related to outdoor and/or maintenance functions, such as loud noises, near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and high elevations. The workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations, such as school vacations or summer vacations. The employee operates a light truck and a variety of hand, power and pneumatic tools, works from ladders and uses standard office equipment. The employee generally has contact with personnel within the department, some contact with vendors, and limited contact with the general public. Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, and damage to buildings or equipment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and manual duties; assists skilled tradesmen engaged in building maintenance and other maintenance activities such as HVAC filter changes, and painting. Drives light duty truck to pick up and transport equipment and tools, stock and material to job sites. May make minor repairs such as sheetrock (patch & paint), carpentry, door/cabinet hardware, etc. Moves furniture and desks, and transport various items among town buildings and facilities; may be assigned to work with other divisions or departments. May be assigned to perform office duties, including answering telephones, filling out work orders, logging in each work order, making telephone calls and ordering supplies and materials. Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates. Recommended Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma; vocational education desirable; one or two years of experience in building trades or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional Requirements Valid Massachusetts Driver's License. Pass CORI and SORI Background checks. Knowledge, Ability and Skill Ability to use email, computers/tablets and proficiently use computerized work order system. General knowledge of hand and power tools and equipment. General knowledge of the building trades. Demonstrated ability to properly and safely operate and maintain power and hand tools. Ability to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to interact in an effective manner with fellow employees and supervisors. Ability to effectively work around minor children. Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and through email. Communications skills. Skill in operating necessary tools and equipment. Physical Requirements Moderate to strenuous physical effort is generally required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, sit, speak and hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, and climb. Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions. Required to lift or move items weighing up to 60 pounds. Physical ability is required to use power and hand tools. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents, use a computer and drive trucks.
