Job Title:
Maintenance Technician Job Description The Maintenance Technician provides comprehensive technical and mechanical support for all process equipment and building systems within an animal facility. This role focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of equipment, performing general building maintenance, and ensuring safe, reliable operation of facility systems through both corrective and preventive maintenance activities. Responsibilities Provide technical and mechanical support for all process equipment and systems to ensure full operational support of the animal facility. Diagnose, repair, and service equipment and systems including, but not limited to, isolators, autoclaves, boilers, clean steam systems, incubators, HVAC systems, controlled temperature units, and related mechanical components. Perform pump seal repairs and rebuilds, as well as plumbing and piping work as needed. Execute scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance work orders and ensure accurate, timely documentation and closure of all work orders. Supervise and oversee outside contractors performing facility and equipment-related services to ensure quality and compliance with site requirements. Respond promptly to building and equipment/system alarms during normal business hours and, when required, during off hours. Assist with the development, review, and improvement of department procedures, documentation, and operating and maintenance practices. Perform a wide variety of general building maintenance and repair services, including minor and major repairs of buildings and non-network-related equipment. Install and replace light bulbs, doors, bulletin boards, cabinets, and similar fixtures as required. Paint interior and exterior walls and perform drywall work to maintain facility appearance and integrity. Assemble and repair furniture and other facility fixtures as needed. Perform preventive maintenance on building mechanical equipment, including inspecting belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, and completing other scheduled tasks. Maintain accurate records of equipment repairs and preventive maintenance performed. Keep all work areas and mechanical rooms clean, safe, and well organized at all times. Create and maintain an organized inventory of parts and materials, and ensure proper accountability and care of tools. Perform maintenance and repair work on major appliances, boilers, autoclaves, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and general carpentry-related items. Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to urgent maintenance needs as required. Essential Skills Hands-on experience in general maintenance and repair of building systems and non-network-related equipment. Practical experience with HVAC systems, including troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance. Experience with electrical work, including basic troubleshooting and repair. Experience with plumbing and piping work, including installation, repair, and maintenance. Ability to diagnose, repair, and service equipment such as autoclaves, boilers, isolators, incubators, controlled temperature units, and major appliances. Experience with drywall installation, repair, and painting for both interior and exterior areas. Ability to read and work from blueprints and schematics when performing maintenance and repair tasks. Experience working with preventive maintenance programs and executing work orders. Mechanical aptitude with strong troubleshooting and repair skills. Ability to respond to and resolve building and equipment alarms in a timely and effective manner. Willingness and ability to participate in on-call duties to support facility needs outside of regular business hours. Additional Skills & Qualifications Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) or similar regulated environments. Experience maintaining and repairing boilers, clean steam systems, and controlled temperature units. Experience supervising or coordinating outside contractors performing maintenance or equipment services. Strong organizational skills for managing parts and material inventory and tool accountability. Ability to maintain clear, accurate records of maintenance activities and equipment history. Work Environment This role is based in an animal facility that operates with specialized process equipment and building systems, including HVAC, boilers, autoclaves, clean steam systems, incubators, and controlled temperature units. The environment involves working in mechanical rooms, equipment spaces, and general facility areas where cleanliness, safety, and organization are critical. The position requires hands-on work with tools, parts, and building materials, including drywall, paint, plumbing components, and electrical fixtures. The schedule primarily follows normal business hours, with additional on-call responsibilities to address alarms and urgent maintenance needs outside of standard hours. Work may involve exposure to varying temperatures, noise from mechanical equipment, and routine interaction with animal facility operations Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockville, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $33.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
