Job Description

The City of Takoma Park is seeking a Vegetation Maintenance Technician to join their team maintaining the gardens, parks, bioretention facilities, and other landscaped areas of the City.
Typical duties include:
Mowing, trimming, and edging grass at parks and City owned facilities April-October; Performing gardening tasks following schedules and project plans including hand weeding, pruning, grooming planting, dividing and transplanting, leaf removal, and mulching; Performing routine and corrective maintenance on stormwater bioretention facilities; Using zero turn mowers, push mowers, and mechanical trimming tools; Using a variety of gardening equipment, hand, and power tools; Working with a small team to install and water new garden designs; Responding to citizen's questions, comments, and concerns, in a professional manor; Litter Removal; Clearing snow from sidewalks during snow events. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to be successful are: Ability to report to work during winter weather emergencies Ability to work in conditions that include inclement weather (heat, cold, rain), biting or stinging insects, and pollen and other plant irritants. Ability to regularly lift and move 30 lbs., squat, and stand for prolonged periods of time Ability to work unsupervised A first review of resumes is expected to begin on ASAP and the position will remain open until filled.
Minimum Qualifications include:
High school diploma or GED; and, One year of progressively responsible related experience; or Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Valid Driver's License Preferred candidates may possess the following: A strong interest in plants and public horticulture Knowledge of North American native plants and common landscape plants in the Mid-Atlantic region Experience using mechanical landscaping equipment and/or larger equipment Knowledge of routine small engine maintenance The City of Takoma Park is a small jurisdiction in Montgomery County, Maryland bordering the District of Columbia and Prince George's County.
