Night Shift Maintenance Technician Job Description The Night Shift Maintenance Technician ensures maximum equipment uptime by performing timely, in-depth troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on highly automated production and facility equipment in a modern, food-grade manufacturing environment. This role focuses on diagnosing and resolving mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues on a variety of packaging and material-handling systems while collaborating closely with operations and maintenance teams on the night shift. Responsibilities Perform advanced troubleshooting and repair on production equipment, including injection molders, blow molders, fillers/cappers, labelers, case packers, conveyors, palletizers, and stretch wrappers. Diagnose and repair facilities and auxiliary equipment such as chillers, air compressors, reverse osmosis systems, other water filtration equipment, and general plant utilities. Work directly with machine operators, supervisors, and preventative maintenance personnel to quickly resolve mechanical and electrical issues that arise during the shift. Propose solutions to complex and recurring problems on production equipment and communicate recommendations to mechanics and management for long-term resolution. Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using schematics, technical drawings, and appropriate testing equipment, including multimeters. Repair, adjust, and maintain equipment, fixtures, systems, conveyors, and other machinery throughout the facility to ensure consistent and reliable operation. Modify, lubricate, and operate equipment in accordance with established processes and maintenance procedures to optimize performance and extend equipment life. Maintain and support industrial control systems, including interpreting HMI (Human Machine Interface) data and alarms to diagnose machine faults and understand operating conditions. Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence and improve overall equipment effectiveness. Support and participate in preventative maintenance activities to reduce unplanned downtime and keep production equipment in optimal condition. Use computers and tablets to access technical documentation, record maintenance activities, and update work orders and equipment histories. Collaborate as a team player, stepping in to assist in other maintenance or operational tasks as needed to support production goals on the night shift. Essential Skills At least 4 years of industrial maintenance experience with strong troubleshooting skills on hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including the ability to diagnose failures, identify root causes, and determine appropriate next steps. A minimum of 3 years of strong electrical troubleshooting experience, including working safely with up to 480 volts, three-phase power, and independently using a multimeter. Clear understanding of AC and DC current, electrical components, and basic controls troubleshooting in an industrial environment. At least 3 years of experience performing strong root cause troubleshooting on machinery, including the ability to assess a machine or system, determine where to start, and work through problems from start to finish. Proficiency in interpreting and using Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) to diagnose faults, read alarms, and understand machine conditions. Hands-on experience in industrial maintenance, including mechanical repairs, equipment adjustments, and system diagnostics. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using schematics, technical drawings, and test equipment. Capability to maintain and support industrial control systems in a highly automated environment. Comfort using computers or willingness to learn how to use computers and tablets for maintenance documentation and system interfaces. Strong commitment to attendance and reliability to support a continuous, night-shift production schedule. Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to help in areas beyond primary responsibilities to support overall operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Welding and fabrication experience, including stick and MIG welding and basic machining, is a plus. PLC experience, including exposure to troubleshooting or supporting programmable logic controllers, is highly desirable. Experience with plastic injection processes or equipment is a strong advantage. Experience in food manufacturing or food packaging environments is preferred. Familiarity with automation, palletizing systems, and automated material-handling equipment. Experience with preventive maintenance programs and documentation. Understanding of root cause analysis methodologies and continuous improvement practices. Why Work Here? Work Environment Work in a modern, two-year-old, state-of-the-art automated facility designed for food-grade manufacturing. The plant is very clean, well-organized, and equipped with excellent lighting and predominantly automated equipment. The environment is climate controlled, supporting comfortable year-round working conditions. This position follows a night shift 2-2-3 schedule from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (two days on, two days off, three days on), which requires long-term comfort with a rotating night schedule. Team members use computers and tablets as part of their daily maintenance and troubleshooting activities. As this is a food manufacturing environment, appropriate hygiene practices and attire, including items such as hair nets or beard nets when applicable, are required to maintain product safety and quality. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Macomb, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $36.00/hr.
