A SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER

Leader Duties:
a.

Assigns work orders to specific crewmembers and selects workers for various jobs on the basis of knowledge,skills, and abilities. Passes on to workers instructions received from the supervisor, demonstres proper workmethods, and starts work. Insures th needed plans, blueprints, merial, and tools are available, and thneeded stock is obtained from supply locions. Works along with other workers and sets pace performing non-supervisory repair work of the same kind and level as th done by the group led. Work performed by theincumbent involves troubleshooting, maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, comb,tactical, and automotive vehicles. b.

Assures th there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Checks work in progress andwhen finished for compliance with supervisor's instructions, work orders, and established shop procedures onwork sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines; and directs or advises other workers to follow supervisor'sinstructions and to meet deadlines. Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, writteninstructions, and other directives. Interprets work instructions and assists lower graded repairers or trainees inthe more difficult and complex tasks. Provides informion to the supervisor on stus and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operions and problems. Assures th safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
Non-Supervisory Duties:
a.

Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and major repair on heavy-duty mobile equipment, comb, tactical,and automotive vehicles. This may include self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, roadgraders, mobile cranes, front loaders, bulldozers, power shovels, tanks, tracked comb vehicles, all terrainvehicles, semi trailers, forklifts, tractors, and accessory equipment. Troubleshoots, repairs and/or overhauls, as aregular and recurring duty, a variety of the mechanically complex major systems to include internal combustionengines, turbine engines, automic and non-automic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, andhydraulic utility systems and controls, cross drive or similar multi-system transmissions and a variety ofintrice fuel injection systems. Makes repairs and modificions to assemblies and components such as voltageregulors, generors/alternors, brake cylinders, etc., for use or placement in systems for which they were notspecifically designed. Improvises work when standard procedures do not apply. b.

Troubleshoots equipment with a variety of the mechanically complex major systems and diagnoses difficultperformance problems and the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks, uses testequipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges and computerdiagnostic tools. Utilizes embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of specialized originalequipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nure or extent of repair. Determineswh adjustments may be necessary to complete work orders, and whether any additional repairs other thanthose specified or indiced on the work order are necessary. c.

Removes and disassembles engines and complex major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel,hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Makes the approprie repairs, overhaul, or modificions in accordancewith the proper repair specificions and procedures, and improvises repair techniques when standardprocedures are not available. Reassembles engines and other systems, and adjusts, tests, and reinstalls invehicles and equipment as necessary. Makes adjustments and repairs to electrical and suspension systems.

Repairs equipment with a variety of interconnected systems to include ste of the art electrical and electronic,fuel injection, interconnected gear reduction, multiple engines, and similarly complex systems. Improvises,substitutes, or alters components or parts to fit into systems for which the items were not specially designed orfinds other ways to correct defects when existing methods and procedures do not give desired results. d.

Independently performs repairs and maintenance functions with little or no supervision in remote locions.

Provides technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees within the team. Assistslower grade mechanics in performing major repair work on interconnected complex systems such as electrical,air and hydraulic systems, complex ste of the art electrical and electronic systems th use specializeddiagnostic equipment to identify problems, complex fuel injection systems and other similar complex systems. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is being filled under Merit Promotion procedures and is open to current employees only. Minnesota Nional Guard Membership is required. Selectee required to wear the military uniform. Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigion. May be required to successfully complete a probionary period. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain the approprie security clearance of the position. Most MNNG position are covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. Irregular and/or overtime (compensory) hours may be required to support operional requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day. Ability to establish effective professional working relionships with coworkers and customers, contributing to a cooperive working environment and successful accomplishment of the mission.
MILITARY COMPATIBILITY
Upon selection, individuals will undergo a background check to valide suitability for employment with the federal government as permitted by law, regulion, Presidential order or other authority. Suitability is dependent upon the particular requirements for security clearance, sensitivity level, and DOD IT network access. Description of Work:
Work is covered by the 5800-job family which includes occupions involved in repairing, adjusting, and maintaining self-propelled transportion and other mobile equipment (except aircraft), including any special purpose feures with which they may be equipped.
Minimum Requirements:
WG - Experience or training which demonstres knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventive maintenance tasks, and can use common tools and equipment in the line of work. WG-11 and above - Experience or training leading to an extensive knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operion, and working relionships of complex interconnecting systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of comb, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify interconnected complex systems on a variety of comb, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Extensive knowledge of ste of the art electrical, electronic, complex hydraulic, pneumic, and other major non-mechanical systems th have a functional relionship and effect on the operion of major mechanical systems. Extensive knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumic, electrical, and electronic controls. Skill and knowledge to develop or improvise methods, alter parts, and make repairs in the absence of technical guidelines (such as modifying parts to fit and mesh into systems for which the parts were not designed); improvise modificions to equipment to correct recurring malfunctions; and design modificions to meet special test requirements or other special needs. WL (All Grade Levels) - In addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience which demonstres the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly reled the repair function of this occupional series. Must have the ability to perform administrive functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publicions used in the repair of supported equipment.
