Maintenance Technician Job Description This role focuses on performing scheduled preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on a wide range of recycling equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation across multiple shifts and locations. You will inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems while working closely with operations staff to reduce downtime and extend equipment life. Responsibilities Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on recycling equipment, including balers, conveyors, shredders, sorting screens, optical sorters, eddy currents, and roll stock machinery. Inspect equipment regularly to identify wear, potential failures, and safety concerns, and take corrective action to prevent breakdowns. Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues to quickly identify root causes of equipment problems. Conduct minor repairs and adjustments on machinery to minimize downtime and maintain consistent production. Collaborate with operations staff to identify recurring equipment issues and recommend preventative solutions and process improvements. Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and PLC-related instructions to support troubleshooting and maintenance activities. Support the installation, setup, and commissioning of new equipment, ensuring proper configuration and operation. Coordinate with external vendors on maintenance schedules and service needs to keep equipment in optimal condition. Use hand and power tools safely and effectively for maintenance, repair, and adjustment tasks. Follow all safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and site-specific guidelines to maintain a safe working environment. Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance equipment reliability and maintenance processes. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs as required by site procedures. Essential Skills Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance on industrial or recycling equipment. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose issues or potential future issues with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems. Mechanical aptitude and strong mechanically inclined background, particularly in maintenance or preventive maintenance environments. Experience working with hydraulics and pneumatics, including inspection, adjustment, and minor repairs. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and PLC instructions to support troubleshooting and maintenance. Proficiency using hand and power tools safely for repair and maintenance tasks. Experience in maintenance technician, preventive maintenance (PM), or maintenance (MX) roles. Capability to work in demanding conditions, including hot and cold environments and very dirty areas. Willingness and ability to work 2nd or 3rd shift as assigned. Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and commitment to following established procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Technical schooling or formal training in maintenance, mechanics, industrial technology, or a related field, especially for more entry-level candidates. On-the-job experience in maintenance, repair, or general labor roles involving mechanical equipment. Experience working with older equipment that requires frequent servicing and adjustments. background in preventive maintenance programs and documentation. Comfort working with operations teams and vendors to coordinate maintenance activities. Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing equipment issues. Work Environment The position is based in an industrial recycling facility that operates multiple shifts, with one opening on 2nd shift (approximately 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.) at a south site and one opening on 3rd shift (approximately 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.) at a north site in the St. Louis, MO area. You will work around heavy machinery such as balers, conveyors, shredders, sorting screens, optical sorters, eddy currents, and roll stock equipment. The environment can be hot or cold and is described as very dirty, requiring comfort working in dusty, dirty, and physically demanding conditions. You will regularly use hand and power tools and work closely with operations staff and vendors while following strict safety protocols and site procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hazelwood, MO. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
