Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of unskilled and skilled maintenance work in maintaining the City streets and grounds, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City streets, sidewalks, and storm drainage facilities and systems.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY AND LISTED AS SUCH IN THE INCUMBENT'S PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL ELEMENTS. VARIOUS TASKS MAY BE ASSIGNED UNDER EACH ESSENTIAL FUNCTION. McCOMB. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, laying and backfilling. Performs routine inspections on various structures such as culverts, bridges and drains to ensure proper and safe utilization. Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, sand, vegetative debris, etc. Ensures the proper maintenance of all tools and equipment by performing daily checks, following recommended care guidelines and reporting defects or needed repairs to supervisor. Ensures underground utilities are marked prior to excavation. Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as mechanized boom, backhoe/loader, jackhammers, packers, and sweeper. Assists in the training of newly-hired employees to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets and storm drainage facilities. Operates tractors with accompanying attachments, i.e., bush hog and sidearm, to cut neutral grounds and rights of way. Occasionally uses a bucket truck and power saw to cut limbs from trees, clear blocked roadways and uses backhoe to pick up limbs. Repairs and replaces concrete sidewalks and curbs. Builds parking areas with asphalt and asphalt packers. Operates a variety of powered construction and maintenance equipment used by the Street department. This may include chipper machines, Duropatchers or leaf machines. Builds and repairs concrete drainage ditches, drain boxes and concrete around boxes. Cleans culverts and drains using hand tools and/or sewer machine. Responds to work orders regarding various street maintenance issues, evaluates the situation and informs the Superintendent of their findings. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Assists with other tasks as needed. Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
INCUMBENT PERFORMS OTHER JOB-RELATED TASKS AS ASSIGNED AND REQUIRED. ANY DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDED IN THE EMPLOYEE'S PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO THAT EMPLOYEE'S POSITION WITHIN THE JOB CLASSIFICATION. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, AND Two (2) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair. OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must maintain a current, valid Mississippi Driver's License and/or CDL certification, if required, or ability to obtain one.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and bees and wasps. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
