Job Description

$17.06 - $21.75 Starting salary based on qualifications and experience. Job Description General Statement of Duties Performs responsible maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and facilities at all County parks and the Davidson County Government West Center Street Campus. An employee in this class is responsible for maintaining the landscaping and cleanliness of all County parks and to provide a safe environment for park visitors and athletic teams. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Coordinator. Illustrative Examples of Work Maintains grounds and fields, landscaping, shrubs and trees at all County parks. Mows, weed eats, seeds and applies fertilizers and chemicals. Removes leaves and picks up litter and trash. Maintains trails and walking paths. Applies gravel and weed control. Performs basic repairs and maintenance to fencing, bleachers, buildings and facilities. Performs basic repairs to and maintains lawn equipment (ie. Mowers, weed eaters, blowers). Prepares sports fields/courts for games (ie. base stobs, pitching, rubbers and homeplate, and tennis basketball and soccer netting). Adheres to the department's safety rules and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Must be agile and able to move about freely. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess visual acuity to perform extensive reading, visually inspect small defects or parts, operation or inspection of machines, use measurement devices and assemble or fabricate parts at distances close to eyes. Must possess visual acuity to operate machines such as power saws and mills where the job is at or within arm's reach. Must possess visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics and etc. Must possess the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment. Must possess the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned. Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, mostly outside in conditions subject to changing weather; exposure to temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than an hour; exposure to temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than an hour. Employee is subject to noise. Employee is subject to vibration. Employee is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals. Employee is subject to oils and other cutting fluids. Special Requirements Ability to operate mowing and light grading equipment. Ability to follow turf programs. Basic math skills to calibrate pesticide and herbicide applications. General maintenance knowledge (ie. plumbing, carpentry and painting). General mechanical knowledge and ability (ie. basic repairs and maintenance to lawn equipment). Ability to mark dimensions on football and soccer fields. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other maintenance staff and the general public. Ability to supervise part-time/seasonal staff. Education and Experience High School graduate and some in landscaping and equipment repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Licenses and Certifications Valid North Carolina Driver License.
