Job Description

General Statement of Duties Forsyth County's General Services has a Maintenance Technician I position open in the Grounds Division. The primary responsibility for an employee in this position is to provide landscaping and lawn care services. Other duties include providing assistance in other building trades. Less frequent duties include snow and ice removal, storm cleanup and as needed assistance with elections set-up/breakdown. Variety is one of the most appealing factors for this position, as we serve multiple site locations. Typical schedule is 6:00AM - 4:30PM four days per week during mowing season, and 7:30AM - 4:30PM Monday through Friday during the off season. Due to the nature of this position, the employee must have the ability to work in all weather conditions. The ability to report to work for snow and ice removal is required. Distinguishing Features A qualified candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Ability to work from plans and specifications Ability to report to work for snow and ice removal within 45 minutes of receiving the call is required. Ability to operate all types of mowing equipment (zero turn mowers, walk behind mowers, sidewalk edger, weed eater, blower and pruning shears). Must be able to service and maintain small and heavy equipment, tow and back loaded trailers, and load and unload heavy equipment. Must have lifting capability of over 100 lbs occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from high school or GED and three years experience in grounds maintenance work. Must have demonstrated ability to perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work in grounds maintenance work including the operation of heavy equipment. A higher education level may be considered as substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. A commercial driver's license is essential. Duties require the certification to haul loads exceeding 26,000 lbs. Applicant must have a valid CDL or learner's permit with full CDL certification within six months of initial employment. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the U.S. Department of Justice's Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists with outdoor activities such as mowing lawns; trimming shrubs and trees; landscaping, planting, fertilizing, and spraying lawns, shrubs, flowers, and trees; and removing leaves. Removes snow and ice from county parking lots and sidewalks. Maintains mowers and other small equipment and tools. Performs related work as required. Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
