Job Description

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellbeing, connection and belonging, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad. Cornell Recreational Services offers a wide variety of fitness, wellness, sports and open recreation activities for Cornell students, staff, faculty, retirees and their spouses/partners. Through our broad-based programs, we try to promote a healthy and holistic lifestyle throughout the campus community. As a key member of our Athletics and Physical Education team, the S09 Maintenance Mechanic provides comprehensive mechanical and advanced technical support for over 600 pieces of equipment in the Cornell Fitness Centers including all cardio machines, spin bikes, selectorized equipment, plate loaded equipment, and free weight equipment. Duties include but are not limited to daily inspections of fitness equipment in all five fitness center locations, technical analysis and minor repair of all fitness equipment utilizing industry certifications and escalating to appropriate university skilled trades when needed. This position is also responsible for organizing and maintaining service records pertaining to duties listed above to ensure equipment warranties are valid. In addition, the Maintenance Mechanic is also in charge of coordinating, purchasing, and accurately maintaining inventory of all replacement parts for fitness equipment. This position is part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The current rate of pay is listed in the collective bargaining agreement here: https://hr.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2023-04/uaw.pdf and starts at $29.47/hour. No relocation assistance is provided for this position. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Required Qualifications:
High School diploma with at least 2 years of experience in mechanical maintenance and technical repair work. At least 2 years of experience working on fitness equipment or similar systems. Experienced with computer software such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent communication skills, diplomacy, and customer service to interact with students, faculty, shops staff, and equipment vendors. Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing. Must possess and maintain a valid NYS drivers license. American Red Cross First Aid and Adult CPR Certification required. (May be completed within six months of the start of the employment)
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 100 lbs. (minimal). Must be able to reach over your head, and perform various lifting, pulling and pushing operations as well as stand for long periods of time, occasional squatting and bending. Must be able to negotiate stairs and traverse campus to perform rigorous physical work for sustained periods. Must be able to work in extremes temperatures and work safely with hazardous chemicals and/or low-level electrical circuits.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associates Degree in Mechanics or Technical/Vocational Degree in related field preferred. Fitness equipment repair certifications including Precor and Matrix.
