The Oneida•Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has a vacancy and is accepting applications for the following full•time position:

Sunday thru Thursday, 10:30 PM•7:00 AM•position may require some weekend and overtime hours. All Authority positions are contingent upon pre-employment drug screening.

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC-WELDER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position exists in the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority, and involves skilled mechanical work in the fabrication and repair of existing metal structures involved in processing solid waste. In making repairs, the incumbent uses electric arc and gas-welding apparatus and equipment. The work also involves performing a variety of mechanical and hydraulic installation, repair and maintenance tasks on solid waste facilities and related equipment. Work is performed under general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the technical details of the work. This class differs from that of the less skilled position in the maintenance field, by virtue of the more-skilled nature of the work. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate maintenance employees who assist with assigned tasks. The incumbent performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative Only) Performs cutting, brazing and soldering tasks, using either gas or electric arc welding equipment; Performs a wide variety of repairs to pumps, screens, incineration equipment, crushers, motors, filters and piping, and other pneumatic and hydraulic equipment; Consults with manufacturer's representatives, supervisors and subordinates relative to plant equipment functioning, repair and replacement; Participates in the inspection and preventive maintenance on various machinery, conveyors, and related equipment; Grinds, files and finishes welds in preparation for painting; Keeps and updates maintenance manuals, equipment descriptions, lubrication charts and other data or records related to maintenance activities; Works with plant operations personnel to coordinate maintenance schedules and equipment repair activities; Supervises and performs machinery lubrication tasks and preventive maintenance activities; Installs and replaces a variety of plant equipment and machinery; Runs errands for parts, using pick-up or other light-duty equipment; Maintains and performs building maintenance involving welding, carpentry, plumbing and low-voltage electrical repairs; May determine supplies and equipment needed for maintenance and repair of plant machinery and controls.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of pumps, valves, hydraulic regulators, control gates and other equipment related to solid waste management; thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of one or more mechanical trades; good knowledge of arc and gas welding techniques; ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches; ability to use gas and electrical welding and burning equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to work from plans and specifications; ability to plan lay-out welding work; ability to lift heavy weights; initiative and resourcefulness in solving mechanical problems; manual dexterity; mechanical aptitude.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate Degree in mechanical technology or a closely related field AND one (1) year of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment, which shall have involved fabrication and welding of metal structures; OR (B) Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma AND three (3) years of experience as listed in (A) above; OR (C) Five (5) years of experience as listed in (A) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State Driver's License, at the time of application for appointment. Possession of a valid license at the time of appointment. This license must be maintained throughout appointment.•Equal Opportunity Employer•
