Job Description
Processing Plant Operator/ Maintenance Technician RES Coal LLC | Clearfield, PA RES Coal is hiring Processing Plant Maintenance Technicians to join the team at our 300 TPH bituminous coal preparation plant in Central Pennsylvania. This is a true utility role — most of the time you'll be operating the plant alongside the rest of the crew, and when maintenance is required, you're the one performing it. You'll run the plant through our PLC system, feed the plant with a loader, load trucks and trains, and handle both planned and unplanned maintenance across the entire circuit. If you like variety, take pride in being the person who can step into any job at the plant, and want steady year-round work with a stable, growing company, this role is for you.
WHY WORK HERE
We're a privately owned company with strong, diversified businesses, making us stable and resilient in tough markets. We're growing — RES Coal has expanded to roughly 160 employees across multiple operations in Central PA, and we promote from within. You'll work alongside a skilled, experienced maintenance team that takes craftsmanship seriously. Strong safety culture backed by a full-time EH&S program, written procedures, and MSHA-compliant training. Steady, predictable weekday schedule — most of the year you'll be home for dinner and have your weekends. Local work — Central Pennsylvania, no long-distance travel or out-of-state assignments. POSITION OVERVIEW
Our 300 TPH plant was commissioned in 2013 and runs three primary separation circuits — heavy media cyclone, spirals, and flotation — with screen bowl centrifuges for ultra-fine recovery. The rest is what you'd expect in a modern wash plant: belts, chutes, screens, sumps, and pumps moving material and water through the circuit. The whole game is adding water in the right places and then recovering it on the back end. As a Processing Plant Maintenance Technician, you'll be a hands-on, multi-skilled member of the plant team. On any given day you might be operating the plant from the control room, running a loader to feed the raw coal feeder, loading customer trucks or rail cars, troubleshooting a pump that's down, fabricating a new chute liner, or working with the rest of the crew on a planned shutdown. You're not pigeonholed — our plant mechanics learn every part of the operation and rotate through whatever the day requires. A TYPICAL DAY
Operate the plant through our PLC control system — start up, monitor circuit performance, make adjustments, and shut down. Run a front-end loader to feed raw coal to the plant and to load clean coal trucks and rail cars. Work alongside the rest of the plant crew to keep the circuit running clean and recover product efficiently. Perform planned and unplanned maintenance on all plant equipment — heavy media cyclones, spirals, flotation cells, screen bowl centrifuges, screens, crushers, conveyors, chutes, sumps, pumps, motors, piping, and supporting structures. Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and process issues across the wash plant and recovery circuits. Repair and replace conveyor rollers, idlers, bearings, V-belts, and splice belting. Replace chute liners, screen panels, wear plate, and ceramic-lined components as they wear. Service slurry pumps and electric motors throughout the plant. Cut, fit, fabricate, and weld pipe, structural steel, and replacement components as needed for repairs. Work with overhead cranes, rigging, slings, chains, and hoists during planned component changeouts. Operate plant support equipment — telehandler, skid steer, backhoe, aerial work platform, forklift. Follow all MSHA, PA
DEP, and company safety procedures including lockout/tagout, fall protection, and confined space. PAY & SCHEDULE
Full-time, hourly position — pay rate depends on competency, experience, qualifications, skills, and testing. Standard schedule:
Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Occasional weekend work to support train loading when orders require it. Night shift work is rare (typically less than 10% of the time) and only occurs when production demand exceeds clean coal inventory. Annual bonus. Weekly pay. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn every part of the plant — operations, loader work, and maintenance. Basic welding and cutting ability, or willingness to develop these skills on the job. Dependable, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety instructions in English. Comfortable working at heights and in a plant environment with moving mechanical equipment. Must pass pre-employment drug screening and ongoing random testing per applicable state laws. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a coal preparation plant or similar mineral processing operation. Familiarity with heavy media, spirals, flotation, screen bowl centrifuges, or other wet processing circuits. Experience operating a plant through a PLC-based control system. Front-end loader experience — feeding plants, loading trucks, and loading rail cars. Welding and cutting experience (stick, MIG, oxy-fuel, plasma, air arc) in any combination. Pipefitting, fabrication, and structural repair experience. Experience with slurry pumps and electric motors. Experience with conveyors — splicing belts, replacing rollers and idlers, installing chute liners and wear plate. Familiarity with overhead cranes, rigging, slings, chains, and hoists. Knowledge of MSHA and PA DEP mine safety regulations and lockout/tagout procedures. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a surface mine plant setting which may include exposure to temperature extremes, humidity, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock risk, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles. Must be able to stand, sit, climb stairs and ladders, demonstrate manual dexterity, and work on elevated platforms. Must be able to work in a potentially stressful, production-driven environment. Company provides all required PPE including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, respirator, protective clothing, and gloves. BENEFITS
Medical, dental, and vision insurance. Short-term and long-term disability. Company-paid life insurance. 401(k) with company matching. Annual performance bonus. Two weeks paid time off (minimum) and seven paid holidays. Tuition assistance. Weekly pay. ABOUT RES COAL RES
