June 3, 2026 Position Overview The Town of Chapin Utilities Department is seeking a motivated and reliable Maintenance Technician to join our team in an entry-level capacity. This position assists with the operation, maintenance, inspection, and basic repair tasks across both the water distribution system and wastewater collection system. The role focuses on supporting the upkeep of pumps, motors, valves, pipes, and related infrastructure while learning to troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical components. The Maintenance Technician plays an important supporting role in maintaining the town's water and wastewater infrastructure, helping ensure reliable service, public health protection, and environmental safety through hands-on assistance and diligent work. Key Responsibilities Maintenance and Repair :
Assist with routine and emergency maintenance on water distribution and wastewater collection system equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, pipes, and basic electrical controls. Help diagnose and resolve minor mechanical issues to support uninterrupted system performance. System Support :
Help inspect, test, and perform basic repairs on control panels, sensors, and related components in pumping stations and other utilities infrastructure. Inspection :
Conduct or assist with regular inspections of water mains, sewer mains, pumping stations, and related facilities to identify potential problems and ensure proper operation. Preventive Maintenance :
Support preventive maintenance schedules for mechanical equipment, piping, and basic control systems to help extend equipment life and reduce failures. Troubleshooting :
Respond to alarms or reported issues alongside senior staff, using basic tools and training to assist in resolving mechanical or operational problems efficiently. Record Keeping :
Maintain clear logs of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs. Submit reports as required by the Utilities Department. Safety Compliance :
Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout procedures, and confined space entry requirements. Collaboration :
Work closely with experienced Utilities Department staff, operators, and supervisors to support repairs, upgrades, and daily operations across water and wastewater systems. Additional Support :
Assist with repairs and maintenance on water mains, sewer mains, valves, hydrants, and other Utilities infrastructure as needed. Inventory Management :
Help monitor and maintain inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies needed for system maintenance. Emergency Response :
Participate in an on-call rotation (after appropriate training) to assist with after-hours emergencies and help ensure continuous operation of water and wastewater systems. Qualifications Education :
High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a technical or vocational program in mechanical systems, utilities operations, or a related field is a plus. Experience :
Entry-level position. Previous experience in maintenance, construction, mechanical work, or utilities is preferred but not required. On-the-job training will be provided. Certifications :
Possession of a valid South Carolina Driver's License. South Carolina Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification (Level D) or Water Distribution Certification is preferred. Skills :
Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn troubleshooting for pumps, motors, and valves. Ability to learn and perform basic electrical and control system tasks. Interest in water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Ability to read and understand technical manuals, simple schematics, and instructions. Basic use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment. Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety. Physical Requirements :
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in varying weather conditions. Must be able to stand, bend, climb, and walk as needed to access equipment and job sites. Work Environment The Maintenance Technician will work primarily outdoors at various sites throughout the Town of Chapin, with exposure to water, wastewater, chemicals, noise, and outdoor conditions. This position requires availability for on-call duty and occasional overtime to support emergency or critical maintenance needs. Compensation and Benefits Salary :
$38,000 to $46,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications. Town Vehicle :
