Maintenance Technician / Equipment Mechanic Job Description The Maintenance Technician / Equipment Mechanic maintains and repairs the machinery that powers large-scale greenhouse and agricultural operations. This hands-on role focuses on keeping a diverse fleet and production equipment in peak working condition, ensuring production lines run smoothly and safely in a fast-paced environment. The position involves extensive mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and close collaboration with the maintenance team to support continuous operations. Responsibilities Perform service, diagnostics, and repairs on farm tractors, spray wagons, golf carts, forklifts, and other farm and industrial equipment to maintain optimal performance. Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with small diesel engines, engines, transmissions, brakes, and related mechanical systems. Troubleshoot and repair 12-volt electrical systems, three-phase power, PLC-controlled equipment, and other industrial electrical systems as needed. Conduct regular inspections of production lines, including conveyors, motors, and gearboxes, to identify potential problems and prevent equipment failures. Perform preventive maintenance on conveyors, motors, gearboxes, and other production line components, with production line work comprising approximately 50% of the role. Address broken pipes and irrigation issues, including PVC pipe replacement and leak repairs, which comprise approximately 15-20% of the role. Assist with roof and wall repairs and other facility maintenance tasks as assigned, accounting for approximately 5% of the role. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Use standard hand tools, heavy equipment, and diagnostic equipment to perform maintenance and repair tasks safely and efficiently. Utilize a work order application to receive, document, track, and complete maintenance and repair tasks in a timely manner. Ensure all repairs and maintenance follow safety protocols, operational standards, and applicable regulations. Collaborate closely with the maintenance team to prioritize work, minimize downtime, and complete tasks efficiently. Operate machinery and obtain necessary certifications for equipment used within the department and across the facility. Perform industrial maintenance and electrical troubleshooting on conveyors, motors, and other automated systems as needed. Support general service work across the facility, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic maintenance. Carry out other duties as assigned by management to support overall facility and equipment reliability. Essential Skills At least 5 years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in farm or industrial equipment maintenance. Strong mechanical aptitude with proven experience diagnosing and repairing engines, transmissions, brakes, and related systems. Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and repairing small diesel engines and 12-volt electrical systems. Experience with industrial maintenance, including conveyors, motors, gearboxes, and other production line equipment. Ability to perform preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Proficiency with standard hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in mechanical and electrical repair. Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. Valid driver's license and ability to operate heavy machinery safely. Physical ability to stand, sit, squat, bend, reach, and twist frequently throughout the workday. Ability to lift 50 pounds unaided and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Willingness and ability to work at heights over 6 feet and in confined spaces as needed. Availability to work evenings and weekends as business needs arise, especially during peak seasons. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with hydraulics and pneumatics in an industrial or agricultural setting. Familiarity with three-phase electrical systems and PLC-controlled equipment. Background in industrial maintenance, including conveyor systems, motors, and gearboxes. Comfort working with irrigation systems, including PVC pipe replacement and leak repair. Experience using a digital work order or maintenance management application. Ability to operate and obtain certifications for forklifts, farm equipment, and other heavy machinery used on site. Strong attention to detail and commitment to following safety procedures and best practices. Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a cross-functional maintenance and production team. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is primarily outdoors within a greenhouse and agricultural production setting, with some indoor and office-related tasks as needed. The position requires frequent standing, sitting, squatting, bending, reaching, and twisting, as well as the ability to lift 50 pounds unaided and up to 100 pounds with assistance. You may work at heights over 6 feet and in confined spaces when required. The schedule may include evenings and weekends based on business needs, particularly during peak seasons, and you will use standard maintenance tools, diagnostic equipment, and a digital work order application in a safety-focused, hands-on environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of York, SC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
