Job Description

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. The purpose of this position is for the efficient operation of the vehicle fleet for the City of Murfreesboro.
Essential Functions:
Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business. Understanding of systems automation and how components interact. Troubleshoots equipment failures, identifies and designates problems. Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble. Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts. Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections and inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements. Responsible for the timely execution of work orders. Ability to comprehend technical manuals, instructions and warning signs. Checks, fills and changes out appropriate fluids for all vehicle parts including, but not limited to, engine, transmission, differentials, final drives, pump drives and hubs. Inspects trucks and/or equipment for condition, operation, parts and fluid levels. Greases, oils and lubricates components and performs adjustments to various systems during the preventive maintenance service. Maintains and/or changes air, oil coolant and fuel filters. Performs cooling systems maintenance. Checks safety equipment on trucks and/or equipment. Prepares vehicles and disposable property for auction on a periodic basis. Keeps accurate, complete and timely records of repair work performed. Assists other personnel in the repair of vehicles and equipment. Removes, repairs and replaces tires and wheels if called upon to do so. Follows good housekeeping and safe work practices. Effectively operates a personal computer and job-related software. Accurately communicates information to assigned supervisors in a timely and useful manner. Safely operates a motor vehicle for performing the essential functions of the position. Ability to understand, communicates to others, and carries out oral and written instructions. Ability to read and comprehend repair manuals and/or written or oral instruction for repair work performed. Ability to use diagnostic computer, hand tools, meters, electrical/mechanical equipment and to manipulate machinery. Must have some knowledge and/or the ability to learn about occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious, cooperative and productive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public. Ability to concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions. Ability to learn and follow City policies and regulations. Performs other work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School diploma or a GED equivalent. Must have knowledge on how to operate and maintain diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions and steering
Special Certification and Licenses:
Class B or C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred. Ability to successfully complete employer-provided certification training upon initial assignment and every three (3) years in accordance with the OSHA Powered Industrial Truck standard 29CFR 1910.178. Must have Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Preventative Maintenance Inspection certification or be able to obtain same within one (1) year after employment. Failure to obtain certification will be considered unsatisfactory job performance which may result in termination. The City of Murfreesboro is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
